Violence erupts during Levi Mippy child neglect case

The father of a child left disabled because of neglect stormed into a Perth courtroom today and punched a man before trying to attack the boy's mother and former partner.
Amber Marie Minett, 27, and her former partner Cassidy James Johnstone, 25, were due to be sentenced in Perth's District Court today after pleading guilty to child neglect that left two-year-old Levi Mippy a quadriplegic.
The toddler's biological father, Mervin Mippy, entered the courtroom during proceedings and sat down in the public gallery, before punching the man sitting beside him, who is believed to be a close friend of Minett.
The man was not seriously injured.
Mr Mippy then ran around the courtroom and attempted to attack Johnstone and Minett, who were sitting in the dock.
Security officers restrained the agitated man as he screamed at the pair.
Johnstone and Minett were quickly ushered out of the court.
Judge Anette Schoombee was also rushed out of the room into her chambers.
About half a dozen security officers restrained Mr Mippy and escorted him outside of the District Court.
When the proceedings resumed, Judge Schoombee apologised to the two accused, who were clearly shaken by the ordeal and were both crying.
"That should not have happened," she said.
Judge Schoombee said Mr Mippy would be charged with contempt of court and may also face assault charges.
She ordered a trial of issues be held before Johnstone and Minett were sentenced after defence lawyers for the pair said there were disagreements over the facts in the case.
The pair pleaded guilty in March this year to the neglect of Levi in December 2010, when he was eight months old.
They failed to take the child to hospital after he was badly injured.
The circumstances surrounding how he became to be injured are not known.
The baby boy was not taken to hospital until the following night, and was left quadriplegic, blind and has multiple seizures each day.
Johnstone and Minett were released on bail until their next court appearance later this month.

Perth duo plead guilty to child neglect

A Perth man and woman have pleaded guilty to child neglect charges for failing to seek medical assistance for a child who has been left with permanent disabilities.
Amber Marie Minett, 27, and Cassidy James Johnstone, 25, had been due to stand trial in the District Court over their neglect of Minett's eight-month-old baby in December 2010.
The couple were living together when the child, Levi Mippy, was injured in an unexplained incident.
He was not taken to hospital until the child's paternal grandmother, Doris Mippy, saw him the next day.
Levi, now 22 months old, was left blind and a quadriplegic.
He also suffers five to seven seizures a day.
Ms Mippy is now Levi's carer and says she hopes Minett and Johnstone are jailed.
"Anything they get is not going to compare to what he's going through all the time," she said.
"He will always be on medication for the rest of his life as a result of what his mother and Cassidy Johnstone done to him.
"I'm just relieved they're going to be sentenced and he's going to get justice."
Investigating officer Sergeant Tony Walton says exactly what happened to the boy may never be known.
"In my 18 years, this is probably the most emotional case that I've worked on," he said.
"It was difficult right from the word go when we got that phone call right up until now." Minett and Johnstone have been released on bail until they are sentenced in May.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail.
