Court jails child-sex offender Jason Bryan Michie

A child-sex offender has been jailed for 17 months for further offending.
Jason Bryan Michie, 26, was given an eight-month suspended sentence last year for indecently assaulting a seven-year-old boy.
He was put on a good behaviour bond and the sex offenders register.
The Adelaide District Court heard Michie later was found with more than 160 images and 10 videos of child pornography.
He also joined Port Noarlunga Surf Lifesaving Club and the Country Fire Service and a scouts application package was found at his home, along with a St John Ambulance volunteer uniform and an after-hours school care name badge.
The hearing was told Michie advertised online for babysitting work and received one reply.
Judge David Smith said the advertisement read: "I have a national police certificate and safe work around children certificate. I can do most things whilst babysitting, preparing food, helping with homework, bath time etcetera. I have experience with children with special needs and children with hearing problems".
Judge Smith said Michie faced sexual abuse as a child, something only recently uncovered by a psychologist.
"When you were eight years old you were sexually abused by a friend of your father ... you did not complain to your parents at the time," he said.
"Plainly you require treatment for the abuse you suffered ... It is a significant contributor to your sexual offending."
The hearing was told Michie regretted his actions.
His sentencing included a range of traffic offences, including using a motor scooter while disqualified.
A non-parole term of a year was set.

Jason Bryan Michie jailed for undertaking volunteer work while registered as a child sex offender

A man who calls himself a "kiddy toucher" will spend at least a year in jail for defying conditions imposed as a registered child sex offender, by undertaking volunteer work.
The District Court today jailed Jason Bryan Michie for 17 months with a non-parole period of 12 months.
He pleaded guilty to failing to comply with reporting obligations when a registrable offender, applying for child-related work, possessing child pornography and driving offences.
Michie, 26, was placed on a child sex offender register but admitted to volunteering at the Port Noarlunga Surf Lifesaving Club and the Country Fire Service, to having a Facebook account without notifying authorities and to residing in the shed of a house where an 18-month-old child lived.
Michie was given an eight-month suspended sentence last year for inducing a seven-year-old boy, who he was babysitting, to expose himself.
He was also given a four-month suspended sentence for driving offences, which he breached when he was caught riding an unregistered and uninsured scooter while disqualified from driving.
In sentencing today, Judge David Smith said police had found a USB with 116 images and 10 videos depicting children under the age of 14.
Judge Smith said police also uncovered a Scouts application package, St John's uniform and a Hallett Cove after-hours school care badge.
He said Michie advertised on the Gumtree website seeking work as a babysitter, stating "I have a national police certificate and a safe work around children certificate" and that he was able to "help with homework and bath time".
Judge Smith said Michie had constantly sought to put himself near children.
"You have a long way to go," he said.

SA 'kiddy toucher' breached bans

A man on a bond for indecently assaulting a boy was trying to "challenge himself" when he later unlawfully sought work as a babysitter, a court has been told.
Jason Bryan Michie posted an ad on the Gumtree website seeking the work, falsely claiming to have a police certificate to work with children, prosecutor Patrick Hill told the SA District Court on Thursday.
At the time, Michie was on a good behaviour bond after receiving a suspended eight-month jail term for indecently assaulting a seven-year-old boy he was babysitting.
His lawyer, Craig Caldicott, told the court the babysitter ad was "a naive attempt" by Michie to challenge himself, placing himself in a situation to show he was not a monster and could be trusted.
Michie, 26, was facing a sentencing hearing after pleading guilty to various offences, including an aggravated charge of possessing child pornography.
After being given the bond for the indecent assault last year, Michie was placed on the sex offender register and banned from working with children.
His admitted offences include failing to comply with his reporting conditions and applying for child-related work.
Michie became a volunteer with an Adelaide surf lifesaving club and the Country Fire Service (CFS).
Mr Caldicott submitted that Michie, who had "unresolved issues" from his childhood, does not objectively realise he has an attraction to children and needs intensive counselling.
Mr Hill said the most serious offence involved the child pornography images found on a USB stick and laptops.
He also noted Michie continued to offend after being given suspended sentences and placed on bonds.
"The prospects of rehabilitation are, in my submission, quite low," he said.
At an earlier hearing when Michie was representing himself, he said he didn't deserve legal aid because it was "not for kiddy touchers".
Judge David Smith will sentence Michie on November 27.

SA 'kiddy toucher' breached bans

A self-described "kiddy toucher" is facing jail after doing volunteer work with an Adelaide surf lifesaving club and the Country Fire Service in breach of a ban on his having contact with children.
Jason Bryan Michie was given a suspended eight-month jail sentence in the South Australian District Court last year for indecently assaulting a seven-year-old boy he was babysitting.
The then 24-year-old was placed on a sex offender register, but has admitted failing to comply with his reporting obligations and applying for child-related work.
On Friday, Michie represented himself when he appeared before Judge Simon Stretton who urged him to get a lawyer, telling him: "you are at serious risk of going to jail."
Prosecutor Patrick Hills said Michie's breaches included failing to reveal he was residing in a shed at the back of premises where an 18-month-old child lived and having a Facebook account.
Michie also was a volunteer with the CFS, which engaged in community events, and with the Port Noarlunga Surf Lifesaving Club, which had active programs for children.
His original offending involved his daring the boy to undress and touching him inappropriately over his clothing.
The prosecutor in that case had called for an immediate custodial sentence, noting the boy's young age, the breach of trust and the fact that the offending was grooming and could have progressed further.
Michie also represented himself at that hearing, telling the judge he didn't deserve legal aid because it was "not for kiddy touchers".
Judge Stretton continued his bail and adjourned the case to July 19 to enable Michie to get legal help.

'Kiddy toucher' admits working as volunteer for an Adelaide for surf club and CFS

A man who calls himself a "kiddy toucher" has admitted to defying conditions imposed as a registered child sex offender by undertaking volunteer work with an Adelaide surf lifesaving club and the CFS.
Jason Bryan Michie was given a suspended eight-month prison term early last year for indecently assaulting a seven-year boy he was trusted to babysit.
Michie, 24, was placed on a child sex offender register but was back in the District Court today over numerous breaches committed since.
Michie has admitted to volunteering at the Port Noarlunga Surf Lifesaving Club and the CFS, to having a Facebook account without notifying authorities and to residing in the shed of a house where an 18-month old child lived.
Prosecutor Patrick Hill told the court programs and community events involving the surf lifesaving club and the CFS could have exposed children to Michie.
The court heard prosecutors would seek to have Michie serve his original eight-month sentence, as well as a suspended four-month sentence for driving offences - which he breached by being caught riding an unregistered motor scooter while disqualified in August last year.
Michie represented himself without a lawyer during today's hearing, after telling Judge Simon Stretton that a bid for legal aid had been rejected and could not afford a lawyer.
"You need to understand that you are at serious risk of going to jail, you don't seem to be taking this seriously," Judge Stretton said.
"You are going to be significantly assisted if you have legal representation, that is a matter for you, but I suggest you make it your highest priority."
Michie's earlier offending led to him pleading guilty to aggravated indecent assault and an aggravated count of inducing the boy to expose his body.
Michie, of Seaford, also represented himself during that case, telling the judge he did not believe he deserved legal aid because it was not for "kiddy touchers".
Judge Stretton adjourned the case for two months to allow Michie time to look for a lawyer and remanded him on continuing bail.
Surf Lifesaving SA chief executive Elaine Farmer said Michie had enlisted as a member in March last year but had no contact with children before his membership was suspended when the allegations came to light.
"He enrolled in late March after the Nipper season finished and was no longer a member by September," Ms Farmer said.
