Man avoids jail for viewing child porn

A South Australian property developer caught in a global child porn sting has been given a suspended jail sentence.
John Lionel Olding, 44, was arrested by Australian Federal Police as part of Operation Centurion, a global effort against people downloading child pornography.
It involved law enforcement agencies in 170 countries and was responsible for more than 100 arrests in Australia.
Olding pleaded guilty to obtaining child pornography in 2008.
Imposing sentence on Thursday, District Court Judge Paul Rice said Olding had downloaded 179 images of children under 14 years, 204 images of children aged 14-16, and six animated images of children under 14.
“Having viewed a selection of the images, it must be said that they really make victims of the children; the children are degraded, corrupted and exploited. In short, they have been abused,” he said.
“The sites that allow access to these images thrive because of the large number of hits to the sites, thereby creating and fostering demand for them.
“There is no doubt this is a serious offence that must attract a strong general deterrent in an endeavour to deter people from accessing those sites and downloading child pornography.”
However, Judge Rice said Olding’s contrition and remorse and efforts to rehabilitate himself provided good reason to suspend the 16-month jail term and the eight-month non-parole period.
He ordered Olding serve a two-year good behaviour bond.
