Jail for serial sex offender Lawrence Michael Bennett
A SERIAL sex offender who exposed himself to a six-year-old girl and tried to lure her back to his house has been jailed for three months.
Lawrence Michael Bennett, 74, was sentenced at Sunshine Magistrates Court after pleading guilty to exposing himself to the child, asking her to expose herself, fondling her, saying he loved her and trying to get her to visit his house.
He promised his victim alcohol and a kiss then made her vow a "pinkie promise" not to tell anyone.
It is the third time the former plumber has been convicted of wilful and obscene exposure to children in a public place.
During the latest offence at a Werribee playground last October, Bennett told the girl to come to his house 50m from the playground.
The court heard there was a moderate to high risk Bennett would reoffend.
In a victim impact statement given to the court, the girl's mother said her daughter had nightmares about the "old man" and had yelled "help me" in her sleep.
"This horrible man has brought a serious impact on my daughter as she now lives in fear every day," the mother said.
Melanie Rudolphus, for Bennett, argued he should be commended for pleading guilty and said he had sought help from a psychologist.
Bennett previously told the Sunday Herald Sun that he thought he would be sent to prison. "Everything she has said is true, so if that means I'm in the wrong, I must be," he said.
Magistrate John Bentley sentenced Bennett to a year in prison, but suspended nine months of it for two years.

Serial sex offender Lawrence Bennett is back home
A SERIAL sex offender who exposed himself to a six-year-old girl and tried to
lure her back to his house is free to live metres from
the playground where the incident happened.
Predator
Lawrence Bennett, 74, admitted in court to revealing himself to the child, asking her to expose herself,
fondling her, saying he loved her and trying to get her to visit his house.
It is the third time the former plumber has been convicted of wilful and obscene exposure to children in a public place.
Despite his guilty plea, Magistrate John Bentley allowed Bennett bail until his sentencing at Sunshine Magistrates' Court in May.
When fronted by the Sunday Herald Sun, Bennett admitted exposing himself, flattering the child, and arranging for her to come to his house.
He promised the victim alcohol and a kiss then made her vow a "pinkie promise" not to tell anyone.
The Sunday Herald Sun is prevented by a court order from identifying the pedophile's location.
Crime Victims Support Association spokesman Noel McNamara said the decision to allow Bennett to freely roam the streets was "disgusting."
"I think the decision to grant him bail is pathetic, disgusting, and outrageous," he said.
"I think it sends the wrong message about how important it is to protect our children in the community."
But Bennett claimed to this newspaper he had excuses for his disturbing conduct in October.
"I had a few beers and forgot to do my zip flies up on my jeans after going to the toilet," Bennett said. "I then took my
dog for a walk around the park when the girl sat down next to me on a bench. I had a fairly ordinary pair of underpants on
and realised I was showing."
Bennett went home, but came back to the park - 50m from his house - minutes later with a can of VB.
"She told me she didn't have any pets, so I said she could come round to my house the next day to see my rainbow
lorikeet, which can talk," he said.
"I said to come round when my car is there and not when the blue car is there, because that belongs to a woman I share the house with."
The child told her family what happened and Bennett was arrested.
"Everything she has said is true, so if that means I'm in the wrong, I must be," he said. "I was advised to plead guilty
and hope for a good psychological report.
"But it looks like jail."
Bennett admitted previously being fined $400 for exposing himself to a group of schoolgirls in Altona
and on another occasion to two girls under Werribee Bridge, when he was fined $300.
