Teacher jailed for sex with 16-year-old student
A former teacher has been jailed for 18 months after admitting to an affair with
a 16-year-old girl student, which cost him both his job and his marriage.
The Ogilvie High School woodwork teacher was arrested last December after police
went to his home and found the girl hiding in a wardrobe in her pyjamas, the Mercury reported.
Matthew Rosevear, 45, appeared before the Supreme Court in Hobart yesterday where
he pleaded guilty to one count of maintaining a sexual relationship with a young person.
The court heard that Rosevear had struck up a friendship with the year 10 girl
last year, and they became Facebook "friends".
The relationship soon developed into something more and the pair started sending
each other texts.
The messages eventually turned explicit and the pair then developed what Rosevear
later described to police as a "normal boyfriend/girlfriend-type" relationship.
The age difference and the fact that Rosevear was a teacher at her school was
discussed and they agreed to keep the liaison quiet.
But a colleague saw them kissing in his car near the New Town school campus one
day and reported it.
Police were called in and Rosevear was suspended. The pair denied any sexual
Rosevear was banned from contacting the student in person or on Facebook while
However, the pair ignored the warning.
Rosevear set up a new Facebook page using the fake name Hugh Rose and the complainant
was his only "friend".
He and his wife split and Rosevear and the student consummated their relationship soon
after, having sex on four occasions before his arrest at his home on December 5. Rosevear
has been in custody since December 20.
Lawyer Craig Rainbird said his client's life had been destroyed.
"He regrets the shame he has inflicted on his former school and colleagues," Mr Rainbird said.
"He deeply regrets the pain, sadness and confusion his actions have caused to his three daughters."
Justice Peter Evans acknowledged Rosevear's reputation was in tatters and his early guilty plea.
He ordered he serve 18 months, back-dated to December 20, and be eligible for parole
after serving half his term.
Teacher admits student sex
A former Ogilvie High School teacher has admitted to a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student.
Matthew Rosevear, 45, pleaded guilty to one count of maintaining a sexual relationship with a young person when he appeared before the Hobart Magistrates Court yesterday.
To be charged with the crime, there must have been a minimum of three sexual encounters between the victim and the offender.
Rosevear was sacked by the Education Department in December. Police allege the relationship began in October.
The former woodwork teacher has been in custody for several weeks after opting not to apply for bail.
He was yesterday remanded to appear in the Supreme Court for sentencing submissions on March 13.
Rosevear is also facing one count of breaching bail.
He will reappear in the Magistrates Court on that matter on April 11.
