Mum jailed over son's death
A mother who pleaded guilty to criminal neglect over the death of her three-year-old son was jailed today for six years after her lawyer labelled her "feral" but a "good mum".
Melissa Joanne Field, 28, was sentenced in the Supreme Court and ordered to serve a non-parole period of four years and six months.
Her son, David Mamo, died in hospital on February 15 last year after paramedics were called to his Semaphore Park home.
The court heard David died from severe internal injuries caused by blunt force trauma to his abdomen.
Prosecutors did not allege Field caused the injuries but failed her duty to care for him by not removing him from a violent environment or taking him to a doctor.
Sentencing Field, Justice John Perry said he had "no doubt" she was aware David had been the victim of an unlawful violent assault.
"The child was rendered virtually helpless and you failed to answer the duty of care you owed to him," he said.
"Your conduct was inexcusable."
The court heard David was sick on the day he died and that Field made an appointment to see a doctor about her tonsolitis but did not take David with her.
During sentencing submissions prior to sentencing, Field's lawyer, David Stokes, described his client a good mother.
"She might be feral with her language, she might be feral, but she's a good mum and not violent with her children," he said.

11 years for man who mocked dying toddler David Mamo
AN Adelaide man who cruelly mocked dying toddler David Mamo has been jailed for more than 11 years - but no one will ever face justice for the boy's murder.
David John Partridge, 30, taunted the three-year old as he lay dying from massive internal injuries caused by repeated kicks or punches in February 2006.
Partridge and the toddler's mother Melissa Joanne Field were both originally charged with murder - but a lack of evidence meant both would plead guilty to the lesser offence of criminal neglect.
Supreme Court judge Tim Anderson implied at least one of the pair had gotten away with murder.
"The blows could only have been caused by you or Melissa Field or both," Justice Anderson told Partridge.
Justice Anderson said Partridge had taken on the role of a father figure for Field's two children but said there was evidence David Mamo jnr was frightened of him.
The court heard the toddler had told his aunty that "Archie (Partridge) oofed me in the guts" and that he was often scared to return home after visits to his father's house.
The murder case against Partridge collapsed when prosecutors ruled out a child witness who was to testify about assaults by Partridge against David.
Justice Anderson said he was appalled by mobile phone footage of Partridge mocking the dying toddler hours before he died of a ruptured bowel at the Womens and Children's Hospital.
"In fact you apparently found some amusement recording David you chose to let him suffer," Justice Anderson said.
The shocking footage shows Partridge taunting the boy as being "all passed out" and a "weak little c..." - remarks described by the judge as "disturbing and repulsive."
Justice Anderson imposed a head sentence of 11 years and three months for the criminal neglect and for breaching a suspended 15-month jail term imposed in 2005.
Partridge, who has an 18-centimetre scar on his face from an attack by another inmate earlier this year, will be eligible for parole after spending seven years and three months in prison.
Outside court, David Mamo Snr said that no sentence could ever bring back his son.
"I just came to see, because I am here for my son and to finalise this matter just for us, for closure for my family," Mr Mamo said.
Field is serving a six-year prison term for criminal neglect.
