POLICE say they've dismantled a child pornography website carrying hundreds of thousands of illegal images and charged a Gold Coast man accused of running it. Operation Gatekeeper has also saved 29 children from around the world, including one in Queensland, from further sexual exploitation, police say. The operation has been wound up after a long-running effort to nab the mastermind and as many users as possible. Queensland police said 21 people from the state had been charged, including a 23-year-old Helensvale man alleged to be the site's administrator and operator. He's been charged with possessing child exploitation material and using a carriage service for child pornography material and will face the Brisbane District Court on June 3. A juvenile, who's already been dealt with under the Youth Justice Act, was also among those arrested. Child Safety Director, Detective Superintendent Cameron Harsley, said the rescue of exploited children was hugely satisfying, as was the seizure of 307,000 illegal images. He said the operation had led to the identification and removal of 29 child victims from further sexual exploitation, including one from Queensland. "Worldwide children were identified and removed from harm in five different countries, including Russia and Mexico," he said. Police shut down the website in January last year targeting the Helensvale man. Since then they've been working to nab users of the site. "More than 21,000 internet addresses from 100 countries provided images to the site, with almost 1000 being Australian-based internet addresses," police said in a statement. Det Supt Harsley said the operation sent a very clear message to users of such material that police could and would find them. Police will hold a press conference later today.
