Name: ROBERT KEITH KNIGHT (Robert Knight) (Deceased - April, 2013)

Age: 62 yrs old (2013)

State: Victoria - Ferntree Gully

Sentence: Sentenced in 1997, to 15 yrs jail - 11.5 yrs non parole..Released 12-3-2009.

Offence/Other: Robert Keith Knight - Paedophile/ Registered sex offender/ Former Scout and Youth leader..Was jailed for 15 years for the abduction and rape of two schoolgirls. Knight committed suicide in the Melbourne Remand Centre by jumping from the upper tier of his prison unit in April, 2013..He was due to face Ringwood Magistrates Court on charges of possessing almost 10,000 images of child sex abuse.

In 1996, Robert Knight held a knife to a 12-year-old girl's throat as she walked home from school in Blairgowrie, put a bag over her head, and shoved her in a 4x4 vehicle. The girl was taken to a house where she was forced to wear lingerie, was drugged and over 18 hours repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted. Knight videoed the vile acts. She was then driven to a secondary school, given $5 and told not to look back. The case was linked to another in 1980, when a young girl was walking a short distance in front of her family on a beach in Sorrento when a man jumped out, put a bag over her head and pushed her into his car. She was driven to a secluded area, where sexually explicit photos of her were taken, before she was dropped nearby, given $2 and told not to look back. The former confectionery worker denied the allegations when confronted by police, but later admitted it to his then third wife, who went straight to police. It was discovered his family had a nearby holiday house. Knight eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years' jail with a minimum of 11 1/2. He was described as a sociopath with no remorse for his crimes.

Paedophile Robert Knight's pictures a concern before his release

Dead paedophile Robert Knight drew pictures of children and was told he had to address his "deviant sexual arousal" just months before he was due to be released from prison.
Three "concerning" sketches were confiscated and led to the serial sex predator being jailed for a further 18 months.
Knight, a convicted child rapist, was released on an interim supervision order in March 2009. Police say he began offending again six days later.
Knight, whom the Herald Sun exclusively revealed was questioned over the suspected kidnap and murder of schoolgirl Siriyakorn "Bung" Siriboon in Boronia in 2011, was arrested last October after 10,000 child sex abuse images were found on his computer.
He committed suicide at Melbourne Remand Centre last week, the night before he was to face Ringwood Magistrates' Court.
The Herald Sun has obtained the ruling under which Knight was released.
"I accept, putting the drawings issue to one side, there are a number of on-going concerns regarding RK . . . which led me to conclude that RK poses an unacceptable risk," Judge Sue Pullen wrote.
Knight was ordered not to go within 50m of a school, visit public swimming pools, camping sites, recreational reserves or beaches or have contact with children.
Knight was living in Ferntree Gully, 3km from where Bung went missing on June 2, 2011. Police confirmed he was questioned over the schoolgirl's disappearance but said he was not a suspect at the time of his death.

Robert Keith Knight was behind sick abduction and sex attacks on young girls and cannot be ruled out as Mr Cruel suspect

Robert Keith Knight may have paid the ultimate price for his sickening crimes, but his victims will have to live with the horror forever.
The world is undoubtedly a better place without paedophile Robert Keith Knight.
He did his inevitable future victims a favour by killing himself inside the Melbourne Remand Centre last week, just hours before he was due in court to face charges of possessing almost 10,000 child porn images.
Knight, 62, hadn't been ruled out as being child abductor and murderer Mr Cruel at the time of his death last week.
Victoria Police yesterday confirmed Knight was one of several people detectives were unable to eliminate from the Mr Cruel investigation.
Mr Cruel is the man responsible for a number of unsolved crimes against children, including the 1988 and 1990 kidnappings of Sharon Wills, 10, and Nicola Lynas, 13, and the 1991 murder of Karmein Chan, 13.
Knight was initially suspected of abducting and murdering missing schoolgirl Siriyakorn “Bung” Siriboon, 13, in 2011, but police last week said he was eliminated from that probe before he died.
Det-Sen-Sgt Chris O'Connor, who charged Knight with child sex offences committed in 1980 and 1996 and who was on the Spectrum taskforce set up to hunt Mr Cruel, yesterday said while Knight hadn't been eliminated from the Mr Cruel inquiry his view was that Knight wasn't Mr Cruel.
But he said he was sure Knight had got away with attacking other children between 1980 and when he was jailed in 1996 - and that he was preparing to attack others when he was charged last year with the child porn offences.
“Given what we know about the man it is probable that future crimes have been prevented by his death,” Sen-Sgt O'Connor told the Herald Sun.
“There is no doubt in my mind he is responsible for other sexually motivated crimes against children.
“Sadly, we either haven't been made aware of those other crimes or if we are aware of them there wasn't sufficient evidence for us to proceed against him.
“We are aware that he is responsible for other crimes, historic crimes.
“One in particular that was not reported, that was identified during the course of our inquiries.
“The evidence was conclusive that he did that crime but he couldn't be charged with it for very legitimate reasons.”
Sen-Sgt O'Connor wasn't prepared to say Knight was a suspect in the Mr Cruel case, just that he remained one of several “persons of interest” the Mr Cruel Spectrum taskforce hadn't been able to eliminate.
Even the coldest of persons would have some regrets about their behaviour in such crimes and this man showed absolutely none
He said eliminating such people was difficult because Mr Cruel was meticulous in not leaving behind forensic and other evidence which could identify him.
“There were a number of people that were rightfully eliminated from the inquiry on the basis of physical description,” Sen-Sgt O'Connor said.
“There were a number of person of interest who were rightly eliminated from the inquiry based on incontrovertible evidence that they were at another location at the time of the offences.
“That still leaves a number of persons of interest that we are not in a position to say, based on the evidence that we have, that person didn't commit the crimes.
“Robert Keith Knight fitted into that category.
“In my professional opinion I am satisfied, based on the information that we have gleaned from our victims, the crime scenes, the investigation and our comprehensive probe into Knight, that Knight did not commit the Spectrum offence.
“But I can't say to you categorically that he didn't.”
The purpose of the kidnapping was to indulge your sexual fantasies ... you assumed total control of her to carry out that evil purpose
Knight committed suicide last week by jumping from an upper floor in his prison unit.
Sen-Sgt O'Connor said Knight's death would only be mourned by the very few friends and family members who stuck by him despite the sickening nature of his crimes against children.
“To me, and I think to most reasonable people in the community, even the coldest of persons would have some regrets about their behaviour in such crimes and this man showed absolutely none,” he said.
“Knight showed no emotion, he showed no remorse.
“The only reason he pleaded guilty was the evidence against him was overwhelming.”
Knight, a former youth worker, was jailed in 1998 for 151/2 years and ordered to serve a minimum of 111/2 years for kidnapping and sexually abusing two 12-year-old girls.
The offences took place 16 years apart on the Mornington Peninsula.
Experts say the chances of Knight not having offended again between 1980 and 1996 are infinitesimal.
Studies done around the world indicate that sex offenders of this type keep on offending until they are caught - they don't have 16-year breaks.
Jobs as a youth worker and volunteer positions with the scouts gave Knight frequent access to hundreds of children in numerous Melbourne suburbs and schools during those years.
Both of the cases Knight was convicted of involved him abducting the girls, sexually assaulting them and taking explicit pornographic photographs of them.
He drugged and raped the 1996 victim.
A police taskforce - led by Sen-Sgt O'Connor - investigating the 1996 abduction established similar circumstances with a previously unsolved incident in the same area in 1980.
Knight, formerly of Wheelers Hill, was charged in 1996 with both attacks.
He was sentenced in November 1997 for the 1996 offence, but details were suppressed until the 1980 matter was dealt with in 1998.
Sentencing Knight in the County Court for the 1980 offences, Judge David Jones described the attack as grave and heinous.
“This young girl, innocently making her way home with her family from a nearby beach, has been kidnapped and subjected to an appalling, terrifying and degrading experience,” he said.
“Such an occurrence is every parent's nightmare. She has had a bag put over her head and then taken in a motor vehicle to an unfamiliar place.
“She does not know where she is, she does not know what is going to happen to her and how long she will be held.
“It is difficult to really comprehend the fear and anguish she must have been experiencing.”
Judge Jones said Knight's victim happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“The purpose of the kidnapping was to indulge your sexual fantasies,” he told Knight.
“You assumed total control of her to carry out that evil purpose.”
Knight pleaded guilty to one count of kidnapping, three counts of gross indecency and eight counts of indecent assault in relation to the 1980 attack.
In relation to the 1996 abduction, he pleaded guilty to one count of kidnapping, false imprisonment, procuration of a minor for the purpose of making or producing child pornography, giving a substance capable of interfering substantially with bodily function, rape and two counts of committing an indecent act with a child under 16.
Judge Jones said the 1980 victim was taken to a paddock in the Sorrento area and callously used by Knight to indulge his sexual fantasies.
“She was subjected to indecent assaults and acts of gross indecency while she was photographed with camera equipment you obviously had ready for this despicable purpose,” he said.
“It is outrageous for a young 12-year-old girl to be degraded and humiliated in this way.
“The community abhors, and I think it would be fair to say, is bewildered by such a callous taking and abuse of a young girl who is entitled to be able to go about her life freely and safely”
Judge Jones was equally damning of Knight's perverted actions when sentencing him over the 1996 sex attack.
“She was held captive by you at the house for about 16 hours,” he told Knight.
“Whilst she was being detained she was told to remove her clothing and wear various items of female apparel.
“Whilst she was there you drugged her with Coca Cola which was laced with Normison sleeping tablets.
“When she was in a semi-conscious state you took photos of her in various items of clothing and in different positions, including intimate positions.
“Approximately 150 individual photographs were taken.
“This was all done to indulge your sexual fantasies. She was being held captive at the house whilst this degrading and humiliating activity was taking place.
“It is clear that numerous indecent acts occurred while she was being detained at the house.
“She was drugged so that you were better able to carry out your fantasies.”
Knight was sentenced in November 1997 to 12 years' jail with a minimum of nine years for the 1996 sex attack.
He was sentenced in 1998 to 81/2 years for the 1980 offences.
Nobody who knew the public Knight would have considered him capable of these depraved acts
Judge Jones ordered that 31/2 years of the 1980 sentence be served cumulatively to the 1996 sentence, meaning the total sentence is 151/2 years with a minimum of 111/2 years before Knight could be eligible for parole.
He was released in March 2009 and began collecting sickening porn images involving sexually abused children almost immediately
Sen-Sgt O'Connor, then a rape squad detective, said of Knight in 1998 that, like many paedophiles, he had made a point of getting jobs and voluntary positions that gave him ready access to children.
“The best possible access to groups of children is through certain professions and certain community and sporting groups,” Sen-Sgt O'Connor said.
“There are a number of offenders who go into these groups solely for the purpose of sexually assaulting children.
“The majority of offenders who offend outside the family have either this professional or voluntary connection to children.”
Sen-Sgt O'Connor, who headed Operation Texas, a taskforce of members of the rape squad, child exploitation unit, stolen motor vehicle squad and local detectives, which was set up to catch the Mornington Peninsula rapist, said Knight was able to fool even his wife by hiding his crimes behind a respectable facade.
“Nobody who knew the public Knight would have considered him capable of these depraved acts,” he said.
“He was able to put on this very convincing air of respectability.”
Knight told police he had started having fantasies involving photographing a young girl in varies states of undress well before committing any offences.
Such was his fixation that he bought varies items of underwear and other intimate clothing of a size to fit a girl aged between 10 and 14.
He also bought camera gear and started planning how to bring his fantasy to reality.
Knight, who left Glen Waverley High School in 1968, was interested in youth work from an early age.
He joined the YMCA as a teenager, helped start up a youth club in Mulgrave and trained a football team in the Mt Waverley area.
In 1972 he was a member of the Zodiac Youth committee, which set up and ran what at the time was the largest live band dance in Melbourne through Waverley Council.
He decided he might be able to make a career out of youth work and in 1977 enrolled at the Phillip Institute of Technology (now RMIT) in Coburg, graduating with a Diploma of Youth Work in 1979.
While looking for a job he did volunteer work with a group of young people setting up a youth centre in Amaroo St, Chadstone.
In 1980 he was appointed as a community education officer at four schools in the Broadmeadows area, a job he held for three years.
He was based at Meadow Fair North primary school, but also did work with children at the nearby Bethal, Dallas and Dallas North primary schools.
His duties included running after-school and holiday programs for children.
Knight then got a job as a youth worker with Waverley Council in 1983 and stayed there for 10 years. During some of this time he managed the Syndal youth centre.
He also ran monthly youth dances during much of the 1980s at a hall in Miller Cres, Mt Waverley.
In 1993 he established his own first aid teaching business and became an instructor for the Red Cross.
As well as his youth work, Knight was an active member of the scouting movement for more than 20 years.
He was the branch activity leader for the scouts' first aid section from about 1984 until the time of his arrest in 1996.
Knight played a significant role in starting the scout first aid service and manned and ran the scouting first aid trailer during many scout events, including the annual Hoedley Hide three-day hike.
At the time of the 1996 offence he was working at the Heinz Food factory in Dandenong as a sub-contractor, providing occupational health and safety advice and first aid.
He was also teaching first aid at Camberwell Grammar School.
Knight, who has no children, was living with his third wife in Petronella Ave, Wheelers Hill, at the time of his arrest in May 1996. He married his first wife in 1976, but it lasted only six months. His second marriage, in 1985, lasted just nine months.
It was his third wife who finally confirmed to police, who already had Knight marked down as a strong suspect, that her husband was responsible for the 1996 abduction of the 12-year-old girl on the Mornington Peninsula.
Knight confessed to his wife during a teary discussion in their home.
“He said, `Well, it was me that took the girl',” his wife told police.
“I screamed and went hysterical. I said, ’What did you do to the girl? He said, `I took photos of her'.
“I said, ‘You took photos of her while she was naked? He said, `Yes'.
“I said, did you rape her? He said, `No I didn't touch her at all. She was all right, she walked home the next day'.”
Knight's wife contacted police and her husband of seven years was arrested that day.
He admitted to police he was responsible for the 1996 abduction and rape, but initially denied any involvement in the 1980 attack.
Knight's elderly mother had a stroke and died six weeks after her son was arrested.
His three brothers and two sisters blamed Knight for her death and refused to attend her funeral if he came. He chose not to attend.
Knight had intended fighting the 1980 matter in court.
Police planned to mount a similar-fact case against him, a rare legal argument.
But Knight changed his mind and pleaded guilty after discovering how strong the police case was and how many similar facts their detective work had established between the 1980 and 1996 attacks.

Sex offender dies in prison

A convicted sex offender and paedophile living in Ferntree Gully before his arrest committed suicide while in the Melbourne Remand Centre.
Robert Keith Knight was due to enter a plea at Ringwood Magistrates Court last Wed-nesday for possessing almost 10,000 pornographic images while on the Sex Offenders Registry.
Those charges were with-drawn by Victoria Police following confirmation of his death on the Tuesday evening.
Knight, 62, was jailed in 1997 for kidnapping and sexually abusing a girl in 1996, and sentenced again in 1998 for similar offences committed in 1980.
Following his release from prison, he was placed on the Sex Offenders Registry for 15 years on March 12, 2009 but began reoffending just six days later, documents presented to the court showed.
Officers of the Knox crime investigation unit arrested Knight at his workplace on October 19 last year.
They searched his Ferntree Gully home where they found a mobile phone, USB sticks and computers which contained thousands of pornographic images.
A Corrections Victoria spokesman said Knight's death was not being treated as suspicious.

Man quizzed over disappearance of Siriyakorn 'Bung' Siriboon dies in prison jump

A man who was questioned over the 2011 kidnapping and murder of missing schoolgirl Siriyakorn "Bung" Siriboon has died behind bars.
Robert Keith Knight, 62, committed suicide in the Melbourne Remand Centre by jumping from the upper tier of his prison unit late on Tuesday or early on Wednesday.
He was due to face court yesterday on charges of possessing almost 10,000 images of child sex abuse.
Police sources said Knight - who had previously been imprisoned for 15 years for the abduction and rape of two schoolgirls - had been a suspect in the disappearance of 13-year-old Bung as she walked to school.
But police said last night he was no longer a suspect.
A special taskforce was set up to investigate the disappearance of Bung, who was last seen within 130m of her school gates in Boronia in June 2011.
Knight was released from prison on March 12, 2009, and had been living in Ferntree Gully - just 3km from where Bung vanished.
Police say Knight began offending six days after release.
"He was out of prison, living in the immediate area. He had done almost exactly the same previously to similar-aged girls. It fits his MO (modus operandi) perfectly," a source close to the investigation said.
The former Scout and youth leader, a registered sex offender, was spoken to by police but initially ruled out, one source said.
"He gave police an alibi which checked out ... that meant he couldn't have done it, wasn't in the area," a source said. "Taskforce Puma was then set up and re-examined all the evidence, and the alibi was discredited.
"He was our top suspect."
But police spokeswoman Leonie Johnson said last night: "Robert Knight was not being treated as a suspect in the disappearance of Bung at the time of his death."
Knight was arrested and charged on October 19 last year over 9686 child sex abuse images, and other matters that the Herald Sun cannot disclose for legal reasons.
He had been held on remand since that time, refusing to leave his cell to attend court on several occasions. Knight was due to appear before Ringwood Magistrates' Court yesterday.
He had not been considered a suicide risk. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
In 1996, Knight held a knife to a 12-year-old girl's throat as she walked home from school in Blairgowrie, put a bag over her head, and shoved her in a 4x4 vehicle.
