Man admits guilt in reopened rape case

A 40-YEAR-old Atwell man has admitted to raping a 16-year-old girl in Leeming 12-years ago.
Robin Gerald Dyers pleaded guilty in the Fremantle Magistrates Court to five charges stemming from the horrifying rape of a 16-year-old girl in October 1999.
The victim, now aged 28, was attacked in the grounds of Leeming High School about 6.30pm on October 4, 1999 as she jogged home from a video store.
Mr Dyers, who was arrested by police on Saturday, pleaded guilty to the five charges against him in court on Monday.
The charges were:
- Deprivation of liberty, two counts of aggravated sexual penetration without consent and two counts of attempted sexual penetration without consent.
Wearing a yellow t-shirt in court, Mr Dyers was represented by his lawyer Richard Lawson.
Mr Lawson did not make an application for bail and Mr Dyers was remanded in custody.
The victim of the assault released a statement that read: "I am surprised and relieved that charges have been laid almost 12 years after the incident.
"It was an out of the blue attack that was very distressing at the time especially given my young age.
"I was only able to move on from it so well due to the excellent support of family and friends, the lack of an arrest had played on my mind and the mind of my parents ever since.
"I am relieved that a guilty plea was entered and plan to travel to Perth for sentencing.
"I would like to express my thanks to the Police for having helped to bring about a resolution after all these years."
Outside court, Mr Lawson said his client’s world had been “turned upside down” but that he had expressed remorse for the incident that happened in 1999.
He confirmed that Mr Dyers was now married with two children.
“He is very remorseful and that is why he has put his hand up at the first opportunity to plead guilty,” Mr Lawson said.
“I haven’t taken full instructions yet, I understand that the (police) investigation is still pending with respect to other victims.
“So at this point I have to speak to my client and take further instructions.”
Detective Sergeant Neil Barry of the sex assault squad said outside court he was pleased with the fact Mr Dyers had pleaded guilty today.
“It’s a very good result…it’s very good for the victim because now we can say that the judicial system will deal with him,” Det Sgt Barry said.
“She (the victim) doesn’t have to go before the courts and relive the whole experience again so it’s very good for her.”
Det Sgt Barry said police investigations into other sexual assaults in the same area at the same time period were ongoing.
“We are looking at other similar assaults that occurred in about the same period in a similar area,” he said.
“At this point in time all I can say is that we are looking around the Murdoch area…the amount of victims I really can’t say.”
Mr Dyers will be sentenced on July 22.
