A BROOME man has been jailed for 18 years for sexually assaulting two boys - one of whom is believed to have become the State's youngest suicide victim. Richard Paul Manado, 33, was found guilty of six counts of sexually penetrating a child under the age of 13 in a District Court trial last month. In sentencing Manado this week, Judge Alan Fenbury said medical evidence revealed the nine-year-old boy who killed himself had been sexually assaulted just hours before his death. The Crown case relied largely on the written statement of a younger boy, who was also a victim. The younger boy made the statement in 2000 when he was seven years old. The case created a furore in Broome when Manado and his mother - a justice of the peace - were charged in September, 2000. Kathleen Marcella Watson, 50, was acquitted of three counts of sexually penetrating a child under the age of 13, two counts of procuring a child under 13 and one count of indecently dealing with a child under 13 after her trial last year. Ms Watson claims her eldest son is innocent. "At the end of the day, an innocent man has been found guilty and got 18 years for nothing," she said. Manado, a father of four, showed no emotion during the trial, after his conviction or during sentencing. Judge Fenbury said it was rare for a nine-year-old to commit suicide and the medical and scientific evidence indicated sexual assault was probably the dominant factor in his ongoing suffering. "The law must protect the very young from this and the community made aware these offences are intolerable and will be dealt with severely," he said. He said the impact on the victims was a big factor in deciding an appropriate sentence. The damage done to the boys was incalculable. Judge Fenbury said Manado attacked the boys on three different occasions between 1997 and 1999 when the boys were as young as five and eight years old. The appalling abuse was aggravated both by the use of physical force and the fact the boys witnessed the assaults on each other but had been helpless to act. Manado was made eligible for parole.
