Sex Offender Laws Revamp Plan
THE West Australian Government plans to introduce the toughest laws in
Australia against sex offenders.
WA Police and Justice Minister Michelle Roberts said today that proposed
national sex offender laws were not tough enough and had written to the
Federal Government outlining her intention to expand state laws.
She said the proposed new federal laws, which include paedophiles having to
register on a national offender register, would be broadened on a state level to
include serious and repeat sex offenders.
"We plan on expanding the registration and reporting system to target all
serious and repeat sex offenders and prevent them from inflicting their abuse
on any more innocent victims," Mrs Roberts said.
"We intend to boost police powers, enabling them to apply to a court for strict
reporting conditions to be imposed on any serious and repeat sex offender who
poses a risk to the community or an individual.
'There will also be mandatory reporting requirements for these offenders who
are found guilty of more than one serious offence."
Mrs Roberts said offenders would be made to register their details including
place of residence, employment details, make of car and travel plans seven
days after their conviction or release from prison.
As well, registration periods for adult sex offenders would be extended to eight
years and there would be lifetime registration for those who have committed
murder, infanticide, attempted murder and sexual assault.
She said lifetime registration would also apply to convicted sex offenders who
committed further sex crimes.
