Commission Stings Paedophile Suspect

AN American man has been charged with using the internet to procure a 13-year-old girl for sex after a Queensland Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) sting.
The 28-year-old US postgraduate student from Chicago had been living in Townsville on a 12-month student visa, a CMC spokeswoman said. He was charged under the Criminal Code, which makes it an offence to use the internet to solicit children under 16 for sexual purposes.
The man had made contact with a person he believed was a 13-year-old girl in a children's chatroom last month, the spokeswoman said.
The man was in fact communicating with a CMC specialist police investigator posing as a young girl.
The man had engaged "the girl" in sexually explicit chats, and revealed his intention to travel to Brisbane to meet her for sexual contact, the spokeswoman said.
He was arrested and charged by the CMC, with the help of the Townsville Police Juvenile Aid Bureau.
The man was charged with four counts of using the internet to procure a child for sexual exploitation, three counts of using the internet to expose a child to indecent material, and one count of possession of tainted property.
Police also searched the man's home, seizing computer equipment which would be forensically tested.
He was forced to surrender his passport, and was expected to appear before the Townsville Magistrates Court on March 29.
CMC pedophile investigation unit team leader Detective Inspector Sue Dawson said the arrest should serve as a reminder to parents to monitor their children's internet use.
