Man Accused Of Killing Infants 11 Years Apart
POLICE yesterday charged a New South Wales printer with
murdering two infant boys 11 years apart.
Ronald Bradbury, 38, was arrested by the homicide squad at
his home in Sydney's south over the deaths of two boys who
were cousins.
In Sutherland Local Court late yesterday, police alleged Bradbury
had inflicted the injuries that led both children to be hospitalised
and later die of head trauma.
Bradbury, of Bangor, was charged with the murder of 14-month-old
Caleb Paull in January 1993 and of two-year-old Isaac Schoer in
February last year.
The court was told he was not the natural father of either child.
At the time of Caleb's death, Bradbury was married to Caleb's mother
but they separated some time afterwards and Bradbury was in a sexual
relationship with his wife's sister, Isaac's mother, when Isaac died.
Police allege on January 23, 1993, Bradbury and his wife took Caleb to
Campbelltown hospital, where his wife informed staff her son had fallen from his cot three days earlier and had a bruise on the forehead.
Caleb was assessed by a triage nurse who observed the bruise on the
forehead and older bruising on both legs, his nose, the right cheek and both arms.
However, before Bradbury and his wife saw a doctor, they allegedly
left the hospital waiting room with the infant, police claimed.
The facts stated Caleb presented again to Campbelltown hospital, with
Bradbury and his wife allegedly telling staff Caleb had been in good
health before beginning to vomit and becoming semi-conscious.
Caleb was found to have bleeding on his brain and head injuries and was
transferred to Camperdown Children's Hospital, where he died two days later.
Isaac died on February 16, 2004, with doctors at Sydney Children's
Hospital finding his injuries consistent with a severe impact to his
skull, causing severe brain injury.
Isaac also had retinal haemorrhages consistent with severe shaking. Police
alleged that the day after Isaac's second birthday, on February 13, Bradbury
was left alone with Isaac.
Bradbury later told police that, as his mother was out of the house, Isaac
started to cry hysterically and then suffered a fit, began to vomit and went unconscious.
He was taken to St George hospital, where doctors found a large haematoma
on the back of his head, and transferred to Sydney Children's Hospital where he later died.
Daniel Covington, arguing for bail for Bradbury, said Bradbury had
co-operated with police.
Magistrate Ross Clugston refused bail and remanded him to appear in
Central Local Court via audiovisual link on May 12.
