Experts to Check Child Deaths
|
SUSPICIOUS child deaths
and serious injuries will be
investigated by a new committee to determine if and
how the child protection system failed the young victims
and their families.
The Child Death and Serious
Injury Review Committee was
announced yesterday as part of
the Government's response to
the Layton Report into child
protection.
Families and Communities
Minister Jay Weatherill said the
committee, comprising legal,
paediatric, forensic, police and
child protection experts, will
examine cases where abuse, violence and neglect has caused
death or serious injury of a
child.
"It is vital that when
tragedies occur that we examine the circumstances and consider whether we could have
served each individual child
better," he said.
Mr Weatherill said the committee was a recommendation
of the Robyn Layton report and
was not prompted by three suspicious infant deaths since January. He said the committee
would attempt to identify
where children may have "fallen
through the gaps" in the child
protection system.
"It's about learning lessons
about why children are seriously injured and why they die and
seeing what we can do to prevent that from happening," Mr
Weatherill said.
