Satellite Tracks Sex Offenders

PAROLED serial sex offenders will soon be under satellite surveillance to ensure they do not enter schools, kindergartens and other high-risk areas, the Government says.
New South Wales Justice Minister Tony Kelly said the tracking system - which was currently being trialled by the Department of Corrective Services - would be fully implemented in the next few months.
Paroled pedophiles would have to wear an electronic bracelet and carry a small portable transmitter, allowing their parole officer to monitor their whereabouts with an accuracy down to five metres.
The system allows authorities to enter details of areas which are off-limits to the parolee, including kindergartens, schools and victims' addresses.
Mr Kelly said the parole officer would be alerted immediately if the monitoring bracelet was tampered with in any way or removed.
"The introduction of the GPS tracking system will give members of the community assurance that the surveillance of serial sex offenders will be greatly enhanced," he said in a statement.
Field training for Corrective Services staff would begin this week, he said, and procedures for the technology's use were being drawn up. "The present plan is initially to confine its use to tracking repeat serious sex offenders who have been released from prison on parole," Mr Kelly said.
"The new technology will be available to the Parole Board when the Board believes the nature of an offender's crimes and criminal history warrant a higher than normal level of surveillance."
