A-G Questions Accused Paedophile's Bail
|
South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson is to ask
the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for a report on
an accused child sex offender, who has been released on bail.
Yesterday a 67-year-old man, who is accused of molesting children
at a holiday camp in the Adelaide Hills 30 years ago, was granted
bail by a Supreme Court judge.
The man has been charged with six counts of indecent assault and
three counts of gross indecency.
Mr Atkinson says he is concerned about the bail decision, and will
seek more information.
"This case is a surprising decision on it's face and I will
immediately obtain a report from the office of the Director
of Public Prosecutions and ask him whether he intends to
appeal against the grant of bail," he said.
The state Opposition has called for bail laws to be changed
so that certain repeat offenders must prove before a court
that they are fit for release.
The shadow attorney-general, Robert Lawson, says the Government
must review the Bail Act.
"The Government has given the rather weak excuse that it would
cost too much to keep more people in custody," he said.
"That's unacceptable. Community safety should be the highest
priority.
"We would amend the Bail Act to reverse the onus which currently
rests with the police and put it on the offender."
