New Child Abuse Laws Passed

CHURCH and community groups in South Australia will be forced to report any suspected cases of child abuse under new laws passed by state parliament overnight.
Families and Communities Minister Jay Weatherill said the legislation ensured the community as a whole played its role in protecting children.
It made reporting of any suspected child abuse mandatory for all government and community organisations, including churches.
It also established a special committee to review the circumstances surrounding a child's death or serious injury, particularly when it occurred in government or government-funded systems.
"Our Government's aim is not only to protect children from harm but also to ensure they are cared for in a way that help them reach their full potential," Mr Weatherill said.
"The legislation will ensure all organisations have an understanding of their responsibilities to prevent child abuse, protect children from predators and to make sure effective and timely processes are in place when harm is suspected or occurs."
