Prisoners Barred From Victims
VICTIMS of crime will be able to stop prisoners from writing to them under new
legislation to be introduced in Western Australia.
The move follows a number of incidents in which victims and their families were
sent disturbing letters from prisoners.
Corrective Services Minister Margaret Quirk said the legislation would mean victims
and others would be able to apply to have a prisoner banned from sending them mail.
"In the past, a number of victims and their families, have been unduly distressed after
receiving some appalling letters from offenders," Ms Quirk said.
"With this legislation we aim to eliminate that risk and block contact between prisoners
and those they have offended against."
Ms Quick said the new laws would also improve community safety by allowing more
information about offenders to be shared among agencies.
"Current secrecy provisions in Acts covering a range of agencies, including police, health
and community development, stand in the way of the prisons system managing high risk or
complex needs prisoners in the most effective way," she said.
"This legislation will break down those barriers and ensure intelligence is being shared."
