David Edwin Rapson jailed for drugging, raping young boys

The former vice-principal of a Catholic school who sexually preyed on young boys over two decades has been jailed.
David Edwin Rapson, 60, was today sentenced to 13 years' imprisonment for seriously sexually assaulting eight young boys during the 1970s and 1980s.
Seven of the boys were boarders at an outer-suburban college that cannot be named for legal reasons.
The County Court heard today as early as 1977 Rapson was undertaking wholesale drugging of a group of boys in order to subdue them.
He would ply them with cigarettes and alcohol before either indecently assaulting or raping them.
Judge Liz Gaynor said Rapson had displayed an entirely predatory behaviour that involved the misuse of his power as a religious man, and as a teacher.
"It was brazen, it was manipulative, and it was heartless," she said.
"The rapes committed on complainant H, at which time you were a deputy principal of the school were utterly cruel, sadistic and violent."
The court heard some students were physically assaulted while one was bound and gagged before being raped.
Rapson's crimes were so evil he was kicked out of the church by Pope John Paul II in 2004 after years of lobbying by his Melbourne superiors.
He was found guilty by a jury in August of eight counts of indecent assault and five counts of rape over the attacks.
One victim told police after a priest walked in on Rapson abusing him, Rapson told the priest: "You know what we do here. God made us this way and it's his fault."
The victim said the other priest told Rapson he had been "trying to resist it" and urged Rapson to do the same.
The former priest has already served one prison term after being jailed in 1992 for abusing a 15-year-old student at the school, years after victims first complained to college leaders.
"These were dreadful crimes against powerless and vulnerable victims who were entirely in your power as residents of the school, and by virtue of the enormous authority and stature granted to Catholic priests by Catholic congregations and by the parents who had unwittingly placed their sons in your entirely predatory hands," Judge Gaynor said.
"You were a priest, a teacher, and your offending occurred at a time when the power of your position in both roles acted as an effective deterrent to exposure and enabled you to continue on."
Judge Gaynor said despite running countless lives Rapson had shown no remorse.
"While your conviction for this most criminal offending may bring some comfort to your victims, it will by no means end the torturous paths your vile exploitation of them set them upon."
Rapson, who has been placed on the sex offenders register for life, must serve at least 10 years' imprisonment before becoming eligible for release.

Victim of paedophile priest David Rapson tells of torment

A victim of paedophile priest David Rapson has told a court how he had been "hell-bent on destruction" in trying to get away from the torment of abuse he suffered 23 years ago.
The man, who was a teenager when he was raped by Rapson on four separate occasions at Salesian College in 1990, said he had lived a life of drug addiction, self-harm, crime and the breakdown of family relationships in the years since.
"There hasn't been one day in 23 years since that I haven't thought about what my abuse and what David Rapson did to me," he said in a victim impact statement read to the County Court on Wednesday.
"My life would have been so, so different if not for the abuse."
Rapson, 60, was in August found guilty of five charges of rape and eight counts of indecent assault in sexually assaulting eight boys at Salesian College between the mid 1970s and 1990. His victims are now men aged in their late 30s to 50s.
Rapson had been in teaching positions at Salesian College's Rupertswood and Lysterfield campuses, where the offences took place.
At a pre-sentence hearing on Wednesday, the victim who had his statement read said he had needed surgery on his testicles after being raped, and the scars were a constant reminder of his suffering.
He said after being "hellbent on destruction" in the years after he ran away from the boarding school, he was trying to mend relationships with his wife and three daughters and his parents and sisters. But he was plagued by anger, depression and a constant inclination to run away.
In a separate statement, the man's mother said she and her husband had never been told by Salesian College their son required surgery, nor that he once swam across a fast-flowing river in a bid to get away from the school.
Prosecutor David Cordy said all the victims had been affected through their lives by Rapson's abuse, after the priest had targeted his victims and breached their trust.
Rapson's trial heard he lured boys into his office with the offer of playing computer games, drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes before they were abused.
"This is very, very serious offending, particularly in the setting in which it occurred and the power and authority that the accused had, particularly with a view that he thought he was untouchable, he could do what he wanted," Mr Cordy said.
Defence counsel Shaun Ginsbourg said Rapson himself had been physically abused as a boy by his stepfather and sexually abused as a boy by two men who lived near his home.
Mr Ginsbourg said the vow of chastity Rapson took on joining the Salesian order was "unrealistic for a sexually functioning person", and that the abuse happening at Salesian College when he first taught there had a "disinhibiting effect" on him.
Judge Liz Gaynor challenged defence claims most of Rapson's offending happened when he was a young man. She said there was an escalation in the seriousness of his crimes and that he had treated his victims in an "unbelievably cruel" manner.
Rapson was jailed for two years in 1992 for sexually abusing a boy at Salesian College in 1987, and was defrocked by the Catholic Church in 2004.
Mr Cordy called for Rapson to be jailed for between 12 and 14 years.
Rapson was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on October 17.
Meanwhile, another former Salesian College teacher appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday on charges of sexually abusing boys. He is scheduled to reappear in court next year.

Former priest David Rapson convicted of sex abuse of eight boys

Former Catholic priest David Rapson has been found guilty of sexually abusing eight boys at Salesian College between the mid 1970s and 1990.
After a nine-day trial in the County Court, the jury of 12 on Friday morning found Rapson guilty of eight counts of indecent assault and five counts of rape.
He raped one of his victims on four separate occasions in 1990.
Rapson showed no emotion as the foreman said the former priest was guilty of all the charges against him after more than two days of deliberations.
Rapson had been in teaching positions at Salesian College's Rupertswood and Lysterfield campuses, where the offences took place.
His victims are men, now aged between their late 30s to early 50s.
During the trial the jury was told how Rapson would lure boys into his office with the offer of playing computer games, drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes before they were abused.
One victim related how he passed out and fell asleep after being given a soft drink and woke while being raped, while another recalled being given acrid-tasting Milo in the school infirmary before he was abused while in bed.
The jury heard one boy was touched on the penis by Rapson as the teenager stood in a line of boys dressed in singlets and underwear.
The school had failed to act against Rapson despite knowing of allegations, jurors heard.
The jury was told one victim was grabbed on the testicles by Rapson in the priest's office, but when the boy reported the incident to his parents and they confronted the school, they were told it would be in the school's "best interests" if the boy did not return.
Rapson's lawyer, Shaun Ginsbourg, had said that his client denied all the allegations, and said there were inconsistencies in the victims' evidence.
It can now be revealed that Rapson was jailed for two years in 1992 for sexually abusing a 15-year-old boy at the school in 1987.
He was later defrocked by Pope John Paul II at the request of the head of the Salesian order.
Rapson was remanded in custody to appear before Judge Liz Gaynor for a pre-sentence hearing in October.
