Shearer denies sex charges involving 12-year-old girl

A shearer will fight charges of sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl, a court has heard.
Deryk Pruckl, 48, of Norlane, appeared in Geelong Magistrates’ Court yesterday facing charges which include committing an indecent act on a child under 16.
Prosecutor, Leading Senior Constable Kerrie Moroney said, that in 2012, Mr Pruckl, asked the girl if she would like to earn $50 by helping him out with a small shearing job at Lara.
“The accused picked the girl up in his ute and drove to the outskirts of Lara where he stopped on the side of the road,” she said. “He then pulled out his penis and told the girl to watch or he would rape and kill her.”
The prosecutor said the frightened girl got out of the car but reluctantly got back in when she realised she had no way of getting home.
“On the way home, he again pulled over, exposed his penis and fondled it while watching a pornographic movie on his mobile phone.”
The prosecutor said that, at a later date, the girl was riding her scooter in the street when Mr Pruckl offered her $1000 to have sex with him.
“The victim said no and rode off,” she said. “Then in late 2013, the girl agreed to accompany Pruckl on another shearing job but instead he drove to a North Shore carpark where he stopped and again fondled his penis.
“Pruckl threatened to kill the girl if she didn’t watch and if she ever told anyone.”
Ldg Sen-Constable Moroney said Mr Pruckl gave the girl $50, even though there was no shearing job, to avoid her parents becoming suspicious. She said the girl told a friend what had happened and the parents were notified.
Caitlyn Wells-Simon, for Mr Pruckl, said her client denied the offending. Magistrate Ron Saines listed the matter for hearing on August 4 and extended Mr Pruckl’s bail.

Rapist jailed for nine years

A rapist who attacked a 27-year-old woman in her bed in a Geelong motel room was today jailed for nine years.
Victorian County Court Judge Leo Hart ordered 38-year-old Deryk John Pruckl to serve a minimum non-parole term of six years.
Judge Hart said the woman's ordeal, which lasted for about an hour, "must have seemed like an eternity".
Armed with a cricket bat and a knife, he entered the woman's room in the Corio motel on February 21 last year after finding the key had been left in the lock.
An amphetamine addict, Pruckl had been prowling the area intent on burglary and theft, the court heard.
He attacked the woman when she awoke as he entered the room.
Judge Hart said the victim was tied up and subjected to a "terrifying and disgusting ordeal".
At one point she fought off Pruckl and tried to escape, but he threw her to the floor and threatened her with the knife.
He escaped, taking with him the woman's mobile phone, a credit card and some cash.
Last July, Pruckl was extradited from South Australia's Port Augusta prison and later pleaded guilty to three counts of rape, false imprisonment, aggravated burglary, theft, indecent assault and intentionally causing injury.
He was originally charged with 15 counts of rape.
The judge said that Pruckl, a shearer for 14 years until an injury forced him to stop work two or three years ago, had a history of dabbling in drugs.
But his life went downhill after he stopped work and became addicted to amphetamines.
