Former pop star Gary Glitter to be charged with eight sex offences involving underage girls

Gary Glitter.

Former pop star Gary Glitter is to be charged with eight sex offences involving underage girls, the UK Crown Prosecution Service has announced.
Glitter, 70, whose real name is Paul Gadd, became the first person to be arrested as part of Operation Yewtree, the national investigation launched in the wake of abuse claims against Jimmy Savile, when he was held at his home in central London in October 2012.
He was later released on police bail, which was extended in March this year.
Announcing the decision to charge him, Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London Baljit Ubhey said the evidence had been carefully considered.
“He was arrested on 28 October 2012 over allegations of sexual offences and the police have been providing material to the CPS since July 2013, with the most recent material submitted in March 2014,” said Ms Ubhey.
“Having completed our review, we have concluded, in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors, that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest for Mr Gadd to be charged with eight offences under the Sexual Offences Act 1956.”
The charges relate to two female complainants who were aged between 12 and 14 at the time of the alleged offending between 1977 and 1980.
“We have also decided that no further action should be taken in relation to five allegations made by two further complainants as we determined there was insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction,”said Ms Ubhey.
Glitter is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on June 19.

Fading Glitter

Former glam rocker Gary Glitter has resurfaced in Spain after being released from a British jail on child porn charges.
Grossly overweight and with his bald head shining in the sun, he looks like another tourist who has had too much of the good life. But this man once had an army of adoring and mainly teenage fans who knew him as the Leader as he strutted across the stage.
Now his career has hit the rocks. the trademark wig and the outrageous costumes have also been ditched.
And Paul Gadd, 55, has all but renounced his better-known but now infamous name of Gary Glitter.
Residents of an exclusive Spanish resort were shocked to learn the newcomer who sailed into their midst seven weeks ago was the shamed rock star released earlier this year after serving a jail sentence for child pornography offences.
Glitter is clearly enjoying his freedom and the jet-set lifestyle his music career brought him, such as his 10m yacht Voyageur.
One other trait of his former life remains, it seems. Berthed in Sotogrande, near Gibraltar, he has a phone line connected and is trawling the Internet on a laptop computer, amassing large bills, according to neighbors.
For most people that would seem a harmless hobby, but in Glitter's case it takes on sinister connotations.
It was his insatiable appetite for appalling images of sex acts with children which brought him to court last, year after he admitted downloading more than 4000 Internet child-porn photographs, some of girls as young as two Glitter Is believed to be waiting in Spain for the arrival of his Cuban girlfriend Yudenia Sosa Martinez, 27, but he is enjoying himself to the full in the meantime.
His red Mercedes-Benz is parked at the quayside and he also nips into town on a scooter. Although he kept a low profile when he first arrived, Glitter's natural exuberance and desire for attention soon surfaced.
"He gradually became more confident and began introducing himself as Gary rather than Paul," said one British resident. "Then he started to walk around in a cowboy hat and then a glittery jacket, as if he was about to go on stage."
Little by little, Glitter has begun to settle into the friendly social life among the expats. He has hosted dinner parties aboard his boat lasting until 4am. At one, his heavy drinking almost cost him his life.
He tried to leap back aboard his yacht after drinking tequila slammers and plunged into the water. He was rescued by a retired British army officer on a neighboring boat who dived in and saved him.
One local said: "There are many here who wish that Glitter had drowned."
On his release from jail in January, having served only half of a four month sentence. Glitter was expected to head for Cuba to be reunited with Yudenia.

Expelled Glitter Missing

HANOI: Vietnam has no record that disgraced former British pop star Gary Glitter entered the country, the Foreign Ministry said on thursday.
Glitter, who was convicted in Britian in 1999 for possessing child pornography, was expelled from neighbouring Cambodia on December 28 and permanently barred fron re-entering that country. Cambodian officials did not specify his crime, nor have charges been filed.
"Up to now, his name is not on the list of those who have entered Vietnam," said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh.
Glitter, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, has been living in Cambodia but left once before after a public outcry last year over his presence. He returned later to Cambodia and was living in an unknown location until his recent deportation.
Glitter rose briefly to fame in the 1970's with a galm-rock act.

All Gary's Glitter Has Gone

He thought it far from comfortable at the time but disgraced British glam rocker Gary Glitter's stint in a British jail five years ago must seem positively luxurious.
Protected from other prisoners in a solitary cell, the pop pervert made teddy bears for charity as he whittled away his four-month term.
The shamed singer still found it tough doing time after being busted with more than 4000 illegal hard-core child pornography images on his laptop. He was shaken by death threats from inmates and, after serving only half of his sentence, was smuggled out of jail.
Five years later, as Glitter sits in a filthy Vietnamese lock-up facing a possible death sentence or lengthy jail term, the memories come flooding back.
The faded star landed in trouble this time after an eagle-eyed Vietnamese immigration officer spotted his real name- Paul Francis Gadd- on his passport as he tried to baord a flight to Bangkok.
Authorities had issued an alert for the balding pervert after reports he had engaged in obscene acts with a child at his home in the seedy sex resort town of Vung Tao.
Police yesterday charged Glitter, 61, with committing "obscene acts with children."
A girl, 12, reportedly has told police Glitter paid her about $15 a time for sex- the amount he used to earn each week stitching teddy bears in his cell.
Other underage girls have come forward to claim Glitter entertained them at a villa.
In Vietnam, the age of consent is 16. Anyone having sex with children under 13 is deemed to have committed child rape, carrying a maximum penalty of death by firing squad.
Locals reported seeing the less-than-glamorous Glitter, sporting a wispy beard and wearing a bandana to cover his bald pate, riding aroung town on a motorbike with the girl. Police cheif Colonel Truong Dinh Tuu is trumpeting he has enough informaion to convict Glitter but says officers are continuing to complete a dossier of evidence.
Glitter allegedly has told police the Vietnamese girls with whom he is accused of having sex told him they were older. He reportedly has also claimed he was teaching them English.
Lawyer Le Thanh Kinh says the accusations made by the girl are concocted.
Weeks before his arrest, Glitter told a UK reporter who tracked him down and saw him with a young woman: "I'm doing anything wrong. I'm not hurting anyone. I'm living a quiet life here.
"If people find out I'm here, I'll move on again to another country. I've had 40 years of this. I just want to get on with my life now."
Locals at the seafront town say Glitter was spotted drunk in local bars, singing out of tune.
There was a time when the former star would have commanded huge audiences in any bar. Glitter enjoyed the high life with a string of hits in the 1970s' including 'Remeber Me This Way' and 'Leader Of The Gang'.

Glittering Treatment

Gary Glitter has arranged for mineral water to be sent to his Vietnamese jail for him to wash in.
Glitter is also paying for his own food to be delivered to Phuoc Co prison, where he is the only Western inmate. The special treatment will cost him more than $600 a month.
"He won't suffer too much," a jail official said.
Glitter, 61, was sentenced on Friday to three years' jail for engaging in lewd acts with two girls, aged 10 and 11.
