Abuse victim sues priest

ABUSE campaigner Steven Fisher is suing the priest who sexually abused him two decades ago.
Mr Fisher said yesterday he was taking legal action against Garth Hawkins in a bid to curb the man's ability to reoffend when he is released from custody.
Mr Fisher, 39, was abused by the former Tasmanian priest in the 1980s.
He said he believed Hawkins, 59, had come into a sizeable inheritance.
"The thought of him leaving jail and sailing off into the wide blue yonder with a quite sizeable bank account behind him, especially considering the high recidivism rate of sex offenders, that's a real concern," Mr Fisher said.
"I'll do anything in my power to stop him from having that opportunity."
Mr Fisher's statement of claim against Hawkins was filed in the Supreme Court in Hobart yesterday.
Another victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is also suing Hawkins, with a statement of claim to be filed at a later date.
Hawkins is serving a jail term of nearly eight years after pleading guilty to sexually abusing eight teenage boys in the 1970s and 1980s.
He committed his crimes in the parishes of Hamilton, East Devonport and Triabunna.
Hawkins used alcohol to partly stupefy his victims.
Mr Fisher said Hawkins had given eight victims "that we know about" life sentences through his abuse.
"Why should they not be compensated out of his pocket for the life sentences that he's given people," he said.
Mr Fisher's claim says Hawkins introduced him to alcohol at an early age, exposed him to sexually explicit language and depraved behaviour, subjected him to humiliating and degrading acts and failed to take reasonable care to protect Mr Fisher from physical, emotional, psychiatric or psychological injury while in his care.
He is claiming compensation for shock, depression, anxiety, pain and suffering.
Hawkins is expected to be eligible for parole in 2008.
