SOUTH Australia is the third state to put 42-year-old George William Williams behind bars for sex offences after sentencing him today to more than 10 years for rape. In the South Australian Supreme Court, Williams pleaded guilty to two counts of rape. Justice Margaret Nyland jailed him for 10 years and six months, with a non-parole period of nine years. Justice Nyland said Williams had previously been jailed for a rape in Victoria in 1986 and for sex offences in NSW in 1990. The string of convictions led the prosecution in the latest case to ask for an order declaring Williams could not control his sexual instincts and allowing him to be jailed for an indefinite period. But Justice Nyland said the offences did not represent a significant enough pattern for such a ruling. However, the judge said she regarded Williams' actions at the most serious end of the scale for such offending. She said that in October 2001, Williams had grabbed his victim, a young woman, as she walked home from a friend's house. Williams punched the woman in the face several times before dragging her to a darkened area and raping her twice. Justice Nyland said the incident had clearly had a significant emotional impact on the woman. "It could only be described as terrifying," the judge said. "The sense of being damaged goods still lingers." Justice Nyland said the fact that Williams was only arrested in 2005, through the use of DNA evidence, also added to the stress on the victim. She said Williams had already spent more than 14 of the past 21 years in jail and now appeared to have become institutionalised.
