Ex-teacher gets bond for sex offences

An Adelaide teacher who believed he was communicating with a 13-year-old girl has been spared a jail term for encouraging her to engage in sexual activity.
Ralf Armin-Grimm, 62, has pleaded guilty to three counts of communicating with the intention of procuring a child to engage in sexual activity, and one aggravated count of possessing child pornography in April and May last year.
In the District Court on Friday, Judge Sydney Tilmouth suspended a two-year jail term and placed Armin-Grimm on a $5000 good behaviour bond for that period.
The then-teacher began an internet chat with an undercover police officer whom he believed was a 13-year-old girl and later encouraged her to perform sexual acts on herself before exposing himself to her.
"Although these offences seem out of character, they were not isolated, in a sense the preying on this girl was sustained over a period of several weeks and involved increasing sexual overtures moving beyond mere preening, to predatory behaviour preparatory to arranging a sexual encounter," the judge said.
"The sting in the allegations is that you were sounding out, a girl you knew to be of the age of 13 for sex, which is a particularly serious matter."
A psychologist report on Armin-Grimm, who had a 1991 conviction for indecent exposure, said he could be prone to exhibitionism.
The judge said Armin-Grimm, who now worked as a wine consultant, had sought treatment after being arrested and was clearly on the path of rehabilitation.

German teacher Ralf Armin-Grimm exposed himself online to officer posing as young girl, District Court has heard

Ralf Armin-Grimm outside the District court for sentencing submissions.

A german teacher at a southern suburbs school exposed himself over the internet to a police officer who was pretending to be a 13-year-old girl, a court has heard.
Ralf Armin-Grimm, 62, had pleaded guilty to three counts of communicating with the intention of procuring a child and one aggravated count of possessing child pornography at Hillbank in April and May this year.
In sentencing submissions on Thursday, prosecutor Ceit Deane said Armin-Grimm had used an online chat site to instruct who he thought was a young girl how to perform sexual acts.
Ralf Armin-Grimm outside the District court in December when he pleaded guilty.
She said police searched his backpack at the school and found a zip drive with child pornography images.
“Armin-Grimm was responsible for the care and protection of children of the same age as he was communicating with (over the internet),” she said.
“As a teacher he had a heightened awareness of the requirement to protect those children and that, in my submission, aggravates his offending.”
The court heard the images were not of any students from the school Armin-Grimm taught at.
Tim Heffernan, for Armin-Grimm, said his client had sought professional help for his “exhibitionism” and would benefit from a suspended jail sentence.
“His ultimate aim is rehabilitation and I submit this offending was an aberration,” he said.
Judge Sydney Tilmouth remanded him on continuing bail to be sentenced later this month.
