VICTORIAN Police have a new lead in the unsolved 20-year-old double murder of an Adelaide street kid and a Melbourne runaway. Known to be regular hitch-hikers, Fiona Burns, 15, and John Lee, 14, were fatally stabbed before their bodies were dumped near the South Australia-Victoria border in 1990. Following her murder there were reports Ms Burns was "petrified" she was about to fall victim to satanists because she had taken part in an occult ritual shortly before her death. Those reports were denied by Ms Burns' family. Investigators last week received a tip-off regarding a vehicle believed to have been used by the killer or killers behind the double homicide. Today, police are appealing for that person to again make contact to provide further details. Despite an exhaustive investigation during the past 20 years, the murderer has never been found and the case remains unsolved. Victorian Homicide Squad Detective Inspector John Potter said it was important to the investigation that the person who called police phone again. "This person had information on the vehicle used by the person or persons responsible for the double homicide," he said. "We are now pleading for that person to call us back with further details in an effort to solve this two-decade-old case. "We also are urging anyone else with information to come forward to help bring closure to the Burns and Lee families. "These families have suffered for 20 years, not knowing what happened to their loved ones. "We know someone in the community has information, someone can help solve this crime, and we ask them to contact police." A NEW lead has surfaced in a 20-year-old murder mystery of two hitchhikers found stabbed to death on a stretch of highway between Melbourne and Adelaide. Teenagers Fiona Burns and John Lee were last seen hitchhiking along the Western Highway, not far from the South Australian highway, in 1990. Victoria Police have never charged anybody with their murders. Following renewed publicity about the cold case marking the 20th anniversary of their deaths, homicide investigators last week received a call from a member of the public about a vehicle that might have been used in the murder. The caller didn't reveal the driver, any persons involved or details about the vehicle. Homicide Squad Detective Inspector John Potter said he believed the information provided was credible. However, there was not "sufficient information available to be able to follow this inquiry through". While there was no suspects, "this crucial piece of information" could lead detectives to identifying a suspect and "potentially solving this crime," Detective Inspector Potter said. "We've received certain information but we need more to able to link it to a possible person of interest. "We believe if that caller rings back then maybe (we'll) solve this crime. He said immunity could be offered by the Office of Public Prosecutions to any person who assists in solving the crime.
