A CONVICTED child rapist who fled interstate before a New South Wales court found him guilty will be sentenced next month. John Michael Watts (aka Waldock, was found guilty by a NSW District Court jury last month of the 1981 rape, attempted rape and sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl at Riverstone, west of Sydney. However, the 62-year-old fled the day before the verdict was handed down. Queensland Police arrested Watts at an inner-Brisbane medical centre on Monday, and Brisbane Magistrates Court ordered yesterday that he be extradited to NSW. District Court Chief Justice Reg Blanch ordered today that Watts be sentenced on August 26 by Judge Helen Murrell, who presided over his trial. Watts was not present in court today and bail, although not applied for, was denied. Watts was first brought to trial on the charges in December, 1982, but he escaped in the middle of proceedings. He was arrested on the outstanding warrant last August, and was granted conditional bail in the Supreme Court. The NSW Government has asked the Police Integrity Commission to investigate allegations police officers helped him to flee his 1982 trial. AAP (6-7-2005) |

A RAPIST who was granted bail after 22 years on the run was at large again last night hours after being found guilty of a horrific sexual assault. John Michael Watts was nowhere to be seen when a District Court jury convicted him yesterday of five counts of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl at Riverstone in March 1981. Police have launched a nationwide hunt for Watts, who disappeared after being charged with the rape in the same year. He was arrested again in Gosford last year following a domestic violence incident and charged with the sex attack that took place in his Riverstone caravan 24 years ago. Watts, 61, a father of two, was remanded in custody by the local court, but four days later granted bail by Supreme Court Justice David Kirby. The bail application on August 19 was not opposed by Crown solicitor Michael Day, who said Watts had lived at the same Marrickville address for several years without being arrested, despite frequent contact with local police. "[Watts] has been at large effectively on the run for some 22 years. That in one sense can be said to be in his favour because he has not been arrested," Mr Day said. Mr Day said Watts had ties with local police through, "things of the ilk of him reporting crimes and being investigated over some issue that was never ultimately charged". Justice Kirby did not require a surety or cash deposit to ensure court attendance, but ordered him to report to police once a week. Other bail conditions stipulated Watts not contact his victim, now aged 39, and be of good behaviour. At the start of his trial last week, Watts pleaded not guilty before District Court Judge Helen Murrell. Judge Murrell continued bail after Watts signed an undertaking to return at 10am for the following day's proceedings. However, after the evidence was concluded he failed to turn up and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest on Thursday night. During the trial the court heard Watts was working at a local bottle shop in 1981 when he asked his young victim to babysit his daughter. The woman - then a virgin who knew her attacker as "Hondo" - was repeatedly raped when in Watts' caravan the following night. In a sworn affidavit to the District Court, Watts claimed police told him his case had been no-billed after he gave evidence against five defendants in an unrelated gang rape trial in 1981.
