Karl Wolfgang Koser sentenced to eight years jail for abusing girl, 10, then threatening girl her with gun

A 70-year-old who sexually abused a 10-year-old girl then later threatened to harm her with a firearm if she told police, has been sentenced to eight years’ jail.
Karl Wolfgang Koser, 70, of Whyalla, had pleaded guilty to the persistent sexual exploitation of a child and threatening harm between 2012 and 2013.
In sentencing today, District Court Judge David Lovell said Koser had befriended the then ten-year-old girl’s family at a caravan park on the Spencer Gulf in 2012.
The court heard that after gaining the family’s trust, Koser molested the girl and eventually had sex with her on average two times a week until mid 2013.
Judge Lovell said that during that time, Koser had bought the girl food, clothes and a mobile phone.
He said that when the girl told him she no longer wanted to see him, Koser wrote her a message on Facebook “threatening to harm her with a firearm if she went to the police”.
“Your offending has clearly had a traumatic effect on a very young girl,” he said.
He labelled Koser’s crimes a “profound breach of trust” and said he had exploited her vulnerabilities because she had been abused previously by another man.
The court heard Koser had grown up on a farm in Slovenia with a violent, alcoholic father before immigrating to Australia several decades ago.
Judge Lovell sentenced Koser to eight years’ jail with a non-parole period of four years and three months.

Serial rapist led double life as a family man for 20 years, court told

A serial rapist led a double life as a committed family man over the two decades it took for police to track him down, a court has heard.
Leonard Levett was a 32-year-old father to two young children when he raped a 21-year-old graduate nurse at knifepoint on a secluded walking track in 1996.
The County Court heard Levett walked past the young woman, who was breaking in her new hiking boots, before following her and holding a knife to her neck.
He previously raped a female hitchhiker he picked up in 1992. The North Dandenong truck driver, now 50, was charged with these cold-case attacks only in 2012 after his DNA was matched to hair and cigarette butt crime scene samples stored in a police freezer.
In the meantime, Levett lived in Melbourne’s southeast with his wife and two children, who are now young adults, and ran his own successful business.
But he slipped up in 2010 when he made sexual advances towards and inappropriately touched a 14-year-old girl.
Levett received a 12-month intensive corrections order for two counts of an indecent act with a child under 16 and became a registered sex offender.
Judge Barbara Cotterell said that “plainly concerning” offending meant Levett was unable to take proper advantage of the delay between his earlier crimes in showing steps towards rehabilitation.
Defence barrister David Glynn told the court Levett grew up with a drunk and violent father, which may have contributed to personality defects related to this offending.
Mr Glynn said Levett also had positive aspects to his character — including that he ran a successful paper shredding business, helped disadvantaged people and was a “go-to” man for family and friends in need.
“This is of course the same man that has been convicted of committing these terrible crimes,” he said.
“He’s both these things — they are both aspects of him.”
Mr Glynn said his client was suffering from depression and anxiety and would have to deal with leaving his wife and children in difficult financial and emotional circumstances.
Levett fought the charges against him at trial earlier this year, arguing he was not even present during the 1996 attack, but was found guilty by a jury of four counts of rape.
The victim of that rape, now a mother in her late 30s, told the court yesterday the evil attack had a profound impact on all aspects of her life.
She said the attack had destroyed her love of hiking and running and that smelling cigarette smoke or seeing cigarette butts triggered flashbacks, nightmares and anxiety.
The woman said she was terrified someone would harm her children and recently had a panic attack while running and hid behind bushes until she saw her husband.
“The trauma of the rape has impacted every single day of my life since police contacted me two years ago,” she told the court.
Levett will be sentenced as a serious sex offender later this week.
