Teacher Admits Sex With Girl
|
A SOUTH Australian teacher today pleaded guilty to
five counts of unlawful sexual intercourse by a
schoolmaster and one count of indecent assault.
Kym William Slater, 34, entered his pleas in the
South Australian District Court.
He was released on continuing bail to reappear in
court next month for submissions on his sentence.
The charges, laid under a section of the Criminal
Law Consolidation Act that raises the legal age of
consent from the standard 17 years to 18 years where
the offender is the guardian or teacher of a person, carry
a prison term of up to seven years.
Documents filed with the court show the offences took place
at Berri and Glossop, in SA's Riverland, between January
2002 and October 2003.
Slater was a teacher at Glossop High School at the time
of the offences.
The documents state he committed one act of gross indecency
upon a girl at Glossop on New Year's Day, 2002.
He had sex three times with a student – once at Glossop and
twice at Berri, on Valentine's Day 2003 – and also had sex
twice with a student at Berri on October 1, 2003.
An Education Department spokeswoman said Slater, who was
removed from the classroom and assigned an administrative
post once the charges were laid, resigned last Friday.

Teacher's SMS Plea To Cover Sex Crimes
|
Slater outside court yesterday
|
A former teacher who had sex with two students tried
to defend his actions through text messages, documents tendered
to the District Court show.
"It's not as bad as you think, it wasn't a dirty sordid
affair...don't tell anyone, this will ruin my life," Kym William
Slater pleaded in a SMS message to his 17-year-old victim, that was
filed with the District Court Registry.
In another SMS, he begged his other victim to
stay quiet, saying "you have no idea how it would affect me".
Yesterday the 34-year-old of Craigmore, pleaded guilty to one count of indecent
assault and five counts of unlawful sexual intercourse by a schoolmaster.
He faces a seven-year jail term for the offence, under which the legal age of consent
has been raised from 17 to 18.
Court documents show Slater taught physical education at a Riverland High School in 2002,
where he met his victims, "(We) had a game of truth or dare...Slater would ask us a
question about sex and we were supposed to give an answer," the second victim's statement claimed.
The first had said she and Slater "were sort of flirting",
while the second said "it was getting too personnal."
Slater continued to contact the girls through text messages and,
on Valentine's Day 2003, he indecently assaulted the first victim in his car.
"He never actually said to me 'don't tell anyone' but we did discuss that he could lose
his job if anyone found out anything about us," her statement says.
They later had sex on a couch in his house- meanwhile, he discussed sex with the
second victim over the Internet.
He bought the second victim $60 credit for her mobile phone and said she could "work it off".
"He didn't say what he meant, but I knew that he meant have sex with him," she said. Slater
had sex with the second victim four times, once offering her cream for beard rash.
During a January 2004 conversation, the girls learned they had both been assaulted.
"I thought with me it might have been a mistake but to know he'd done it more than
once, I couldn't believe it," the first victim's statement said.
Judge David Bright remanded Slater on continuing bail for sentencing
submissions in five weeks.
Outside court, an Education Department Spokeswoman said Slater
had resigned from teaching on Friday.
She said any moves to deregister him as a teacher would not be
explored until after he had been sentenced.

Teacher Jailed For Sex With Students
|
A 35-year-old teacher convicted of having sex with
two teenage students has been jailed for six years
by a District Court judge in Adelaide.
Kym William Slater of Craigmore pleaded guilty to one
count of indecent assault and five counts of unlawful
sexual intercourse whilst a teacher at Glossop High School.
His two victims were girls aged 16 and 17.
Judge David Bright said Slater had an established career
as a physical education teacher and was well regarded, but
a marriage breakdown brought on depression and he allowed
himself to do something he knew was wrong.
Judge Bright said the courts would not tolerate teachers
abusing the trust placed in them.
He set a non-parole period of three-and-a-half years.
