Criminals enjoy 'disgusting' perks at Barwon Prison
Australia's worst villains are enjoying family picnics, bingo and boxing at Victoria's toughest prison.
Barwon Prison's notorious Hoya unit, which houses monsters such as Bega killer Lindsay Beckett,
and sex fiend
are treated to pool and carpet bowls competitions, pottery and music classes and special activities on public holidays.
Documents obtained by the Herald Sun under Freedom of Information laws show inmates congregated for a bocce competition on Anzac Day last year,
a game of giant chess in June, and frolicked with their families during Father's and Mother's Day barbecues.
The Herald Sun also discovered sexual predators from the notorious Ararat Jail have access to computers within the privacy of their own cells.
Documents reveal eight inmates were granted access to their own computer between January 2006 and December 31 last year.
Crime Victims' Support Association president Noel McNamara said people were fed up with prisoner perks.
"These guys with computers are perverts. It's disgraceful," he said.
"When you're trying to cure them, why give them a computer where some of their paedophile mates can slip them a disc and keep them going? It's very dangerous."
Mr McNamara called Barwon's perks "disgusting".
"They're inside to pay their debt to society and they're hardly doing that with all the luxuries they enjoy. The jails have to be toughened up. It's a joke."
The Barwon documents reveal inmates from other units enjoyed:
A MID-YEAR children's carnival party.
A CHRISTMAS party for children.
CRICKET, soccer, basketball and badminton.
AN end-of-year barbecue.
A Corrections Victoria spokesman said Ararat inmates did not have internet access and those convicted of child porn or
computer-related crime were not allowed in-cell computers.
He added: "Prisoners at Barwon are locked in their cells for up to 16 hours a day.
"Corrections Victoria must balance the security and good order of the prison against the need to
encourage rehabilitation through education, activities and other incentives for good behaviour.
"It is important to give them a chance to maintain relationships that will support their reintegration into the community."

Schoolgirl killer moved over liaison with prison officer
Bega schoolgirl killer Lindsay Beckett has been moved to another jail from maximum-security Port Phillip Prison after love letters from a former female security guard were found in his cell.
The woman, who has since joined the Australian Defence Force, had quit full-time work at Port Phillip Prison before the intimate letters were found. Beckett, 35, was moved last year after prison management discovered evidence of an improper relationship forming between the pair, although it is believed they found no proof of a sexual relationship.
But several prison sources have told The Age they were aware of a sexual liaison between the woman and Beckett.
Beckett is serving a life term with a recommended 35-year minimum for the murder of Bega schoolgirls Lauren Barry and Nichole Collins.
abducted the teenagers in October 1997 while they were camping with friends near their homes in Bega, NSW. They drove the girls around for hours, and raped them repeatedly, before driving them into Victoria and murdering them.
Beckett claimed he murdered the girls on Camilleri's instructions. Camilleri, who is serving a life term with no parole, lost a bid to appeal against his prison sentence in 2001 after three Court of Appeal judges described the killings as ''undoubtedly one of the worst examples of murder to be found in this state''.
Beckett is serving the remainder of his sentence at an undisclosed location.
The Age understands the prison guard quit her job with the prison operator, G4S, in the middle of last year, telling managers she was joining the armed forces.
She remained on the casual-staff roster but never did a shift at the prison after her resignation.
Prison authorities then discovered the love letters and the woman's casual employment was terminated.
It is believed there was no disciplinary inquiry into the alleged relationship between the woman and Beckett as the woman was no longer a G4S employee when the letters were found.
Asked about claims the woman had been seen having sex with Beckett, a G4S spokesman said there was ''no evidence of any such incident occurring''.
''The G4S code of conduct strictly prohibits any unprofessional interaction between staff and prisoners, and officer training places significant focus on managing the boundaries between staff and prisoners,'' he said.
G4S manages and operates Port Phillip Prison on behalf of Corrections Victoria.
Corrections Victoria, which made the decision to move Beckett, is responsible for Victorian inmates in both publicly and privately managed prisons.
