Rapist Jailed Over Attacks on Teen Girls
A YOUNG man bullied and teased at school because he was overweight has been
sentenced to a minimum 6 1/2 years' jail for sexually assaulting three girls at
knifepoint and stealing their underwear.
In sentencing
Matthew Hewson, 19, yesterday, Judge John Nixon said the two
separate attacks on three young women -- one aged 14 and the others 16 -- were
callous and abhorrent crimes committed on vulnerable girls.
A psychologist's report said Hewson had a "dirty underwear fetish" which had
turned into violent sexual offending.
Citing the report, Judge Nixon said Hewson's dysfunctional upbringing and
victimisation by school bullies had led to him developing an "Armour of angry,
tough bravado". The psychologist noted that Hewson had the potential to be a
very serious sex offender without proper treatment.
Hewson had pleaded guilty to 13 charges including rape, kidnapping, indecent
assault, false imprisonment and armed robbery after attacking the 14-year-old
girl in May last year and the two 16-year-olds in September.
During a search of Hewson's bedroom, police found two knives and five pairs of
women's underpants in a pile of pornographic magazines.
In urging authorities to organise the correct sex offender's program for
Hewson, Judge Nixon sentenced him to a maximum 9 1/2 years' jail.

Fetish led to sex attacks
A TEENAGER'S fetish for underwear escalated into random sexual attacks on three
girls, a court heard yesterday.
Matthew Hewson, 19, raped a 14-year-old girl and indecently assaulted two 16-
year-olds at knifepoint last year.
The County Court heard Hewson robbed each victim of their underwear, telling
police he thought it would be funny.
A psychologist told the court Hewson's fetish for worn women's underwear had
quickly developed into rape.
"Without intervention . . . he has the potential to be a very serious sexual
offender," psychologist Pamela Matthews said.
Ms Matthews said she feared Hewson could become a more sophisticated offender
if treated with adult pedophiles and rapists in prison rather than being in a
program for adolescents.
Prosecutor Amanda Forrester said the first victim, 14, was walking home in May
last year after missing her train when Hewson approached her. He produced a
knife and told her he would cut her if she screamed.
Hewson demanded the girl's underwear before forcing her to perform oral sex,
threatening her with the knife every time a car passed.
The judge remanded Hewson in custody to be sentenced on 13 charges including
rape, armed robbery and kidnapping on Thursday.
