Jailing Paedophiles Top Priority
The State Government's priority was to track down
pedophiles and "get them before
the courts and get them behind
bars", Police Minister Kevin
Foley said.
Mr Foley described the latest
arrests as strong decisive action
by the police.
He said South Australia was
now starting to see the benefits
of changing the law in relation to
pedophiles by removing the statute of limitations which used to
apply to offences committed before 1982, "This is a very powerful
message to all of those in our
community who expect action,
that we are delivering," he said.
"This is the right signal to
send." Mr Foley said the State
Government had made cracking
down on the activities of
pedophiles an absolute priority.
"That's why we are putting up
to 250 more care workers and
psychologists and counsellors
into our community," he said.
"That's why we have changed
the law and will continue to
change and toughen the law to
give our police the resources to
track down the most evil in our
community. There are a lot of
sick people in this community."
Mr Foley said the police would
be given any resources they
needed to pursue pedophiles.
"Police Commissioner Mal
Hyde and I talk regularly and he
knows he has the commitment of
this Government that whatever
he needs to hunt down the most
evil in our community we will give
him," Mr Foley said.
Asked if the taskforce would be
extended, Mr Foley said that was
an operational matter and was
up to the commissioner.
The Government has not ruled
out any further inquiry into
pedophile activity in SA but Mr
Foley said there certainty would
not be a royal commission.
"But whether other forms of
inquiry are necessary we will determine that in good time," Mr
Foley said.
"The urgency and priority now
for the Government and for the
police is to track down these evil,
evil perpetrators of the sickening
crime against our young, get
them before the courts and get
them behind bars."
