Backing For Child Sex Abuse Summit
SENIOR police
backed calls yesterday
for a summit to address
an "epidemic" of child
sexual abuse.
South Australian
Police Commissioner
Mal Hyde said he was
"very supportive" of a
proposal by NSW Commissioner Ken Moroney
for a summit.
"We would be very
supportive of the concept, but only if it was
focused on taking action
to prevent child sexual
abuse and child pornography," Mr Hyde told
The Advertiser.
Acting Premier Kevin
Foley said he would give
the summit concept
serious consideration
Mr Moroney said he
was "sickened" by daily
reports that crossed his
desk- "I don't think we
really know the extent or
scope or magnitude of
this problem," he said.
Western Australian
Police Commissioner
Karl O'Callaghan
pledged WA police aid,
as Queensland Premier
Peter Beattie added his
support, saying his state
had been "to hell and
back" on the issue.
The proposal was
backed by Victoria
Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon
who said "if ways can be
found to prevent it then
we'd be a mile in front".
