Baby Stealers Sent To Prison

The "selfish and callous" couple who kidnapped baby Montana Barbaro have been jailed for a combined minimum of 12 years.
Mark and Cheryl McEachran put the interests of themselves above those of the then three-week-old baby when they snatched her from her mother in August last year, the County Court in Melbourne heard.
The pair attacked Montana's mother, Anita, in the Brimbank Shopping Centre car park and took Montana from her baby capsule to fulfill their wish for another child. Cheif Judge Michael Rozenes were not those of somebody with the wellbeing of the baby at heart.
"You selfishly put your interests above those of Ms Ciancio and in leaving the child where you did, you put your interests above those of a newborn child," he said. "Each of you put any concerns....ahead of any concerns about the baby. It was a selfish and callous act."
The McEachrans left Montana alone in a derelict North Melbourne house after police made a public appeal to help find her. They handed themselves in when the baby was found.
Mrs McEachran, 49, and partner Mark, 45, pleaded guilty to charges including kidnapping, reckless conduct endangering life and causing serious injury.
Judge Rozenes said while he accepted they intended to act as Montana's parents when they took her, Ms Ciancio must have feared the worst.
"One can hardly imagine a greater assault on the senses of a young mother with a newborn infant than that suffered by Ms Ciancio," he said.
The court heard Ms Ciancio was on anti-depressants and haas suffered nightmares and panic attacks since the incident.
McEachran expressed no emotion as he was sentenced to 11 years jail with a non parole term of 7 1/2 years. Mrs McEachran wept as her husband was jailed and then as she was sentenced to eight years' jail with a minimum of 4 1/2 years. Ms Ciancio and Montana's father, Guiseppe Barbaro, will marry in early next year. In March, Barbaro was sentenced to 4 1/2 years jail by a NSW court for supplying amphetamines.
