More Court Suppression Orders
South Australian courts made 214 suppression orders
in the 2002-03 financial year- an increase of 33 on the previous year.
The figures were tabled in Parliament
yesterday by Attorney General Michael Atkinson.
Under the law, the Attorney General is required to
table each year a report on the total number
of supression orders for the preceding financial
year and a summary of the reasons for the orders.
Where a court makes a suppression order, it must forward a copy
to the court registrar and also to the Attorney General.
Figures tabled yesterday show there were 88 suppression orders
in the Supreme Court and 73 in the District Court. The Magistrates Court
made 46 suppression orders, while the Medical Board issued five
and the dental board two.
The major reason for the orders- in 125 cases- was
"to prevent prejudice to the proper
administration of justice".
There were 19 orders to prevent the publication of
details concerning the accused, victims or
witnesses and 14 to prevent undue hardship to witnesses.
