Alleged Rapist Turned In By Father
THE father of an alleged rapist phoned police to hand in his son
following news reports of a vicious sex attack in an inner city park.
The 24-year-old -- who cannot be named -- appeared in custody in
the Brisbane Magistrate's Court yesterday charged with two counts
of rape, assault with intent to rape and deprivation of liberty.
His mother and father were also in court, while his father told
the court his family would support him if he was released on bail.
All the offences were allegedly perpetrated against a 30-year-old
woman in the Paddington skate park as she walked home from the
Caxton St nightclub precinct.
Defence lawyer Howard Posner applied for bail, saying his client
had voluntarily surrendered himself to police after his father
phoned them on Monday.
After seeing publicity about the attack, he said the 24-year-old
spoke to his father and said: "It's me".
The man -- who lives at home with his parents -- stayed there
and gave an interview to police after they arrived.
"The family sat together waiting," Mr Posner said.
But prosecutor Sgt Henri Rantala opposed the man's release for
what he said was a "heinous" crime that would see him serve jail time.
Sgt Rantala said the man had admitted being with the woman and
punching her on the head after she refused to have sex with him.
Magistrate Jacqui Payne agreed to grant the man bail on conditions
including that his family provide a $1000 surety and that he
report to police twice a week.
He must also live with his parents and not leave home without
them between 9pm and 6am.
The man was ordered not to have any contact with his alleged victim
and surrendered his passport yesterday.
He will reappear before the court next month.
