Fresh Sex Fiend Shock
A SERIAL pedophile deemed beyond rehabilitation is
to be released from jail after a parole hearing.
Authorities have refused to release a picture of
the man,
John Edward Barnes, who has repeatedly
drugged and molested children.
Barnes, a registered sex offender, has amassed
128 convictions -- many for child sex-related
crimes -- in the past four decades.
He was jailed in 1994 on 14 counts of rape,
indecently assaulting a minor and drugging a
child for the purposes of penetration.
In 1999, after serving a five-year non-parole
period for those crimes, he was released.
But Barnes was jailed again soon after when he
breached one of his parole conditions.
The next year, in October 2000, he was paroled
again.
But within 2 1/2 months, he had abducted, drugged
and raped a 15-year-old boy he had befriended at
Flinders St Station.
For that crime, Barnes was sentenced to 10 years'
jail with an unusually high non-parole term of
nine years. The judge noted that Barnes had no
remorse and no prospects of rehabilitation.
The terms were reduced on appeal to eight years'
jail, with a non-parole period of four years and
six months.
He was first eligible for parole in May last year,
but The Adult Parole Board denied him the privilege.
His next parole hearing is scheduled for May.
The victim's father believes Barnes remains a threat
to children everywhere and authorities should keep
him in prison.
"If I had a dog that got out and savaged a child I would
be responsible," he said.
"Why aren't the judges or the Parole Board responsible?
We pander and protect pedophiles, but who is protecting
our society?"
Barnes is now 74, but during a court appearance in 2003,
a judge said his age and poor health were no safeguard
against him preying on children again.
This week, a friend described Barnes as an affable man
with a flair for oil painting, but with an incurable
predilection for young children.
