Net User Charged Over Child-Sex
A QUEENSLAND man has been charged with child-sex offences
after he allegedly travelled to Western Australia to meet a child
he met over the Internet.
Police allege the 49-year-old Townsville man spent a week chatting
on the net to a police officer who he believed was a child under 16,
and who he arranged to meet before travelling to WA.
The man allegedly engaged the police officer in sexually explicit
conversation and sent sexually explicit material.
Inspector Kellie Properjohn said the fact he had travelled to WA
showed such crimes had no borders.
"We are dealing with international and national predators that
choose to come to WA to exploit our children," she said.
The man has been charged with using electronic communication
to procure a person the offender believed to be under 16 years to
engage in sexual activity, and using electronic communication to
expose a person the offender believed to be under 16 years to indecent matter.
He will face Perth Magistrates Court today.
The man is the second person to be charged under WA's tough new
cyber predator laws introduced last month, which allow police officers
to trawl the Internet searching for pedophiles.
