Baby Raped, Tortured and Killed
A TEENAGER has appeared in court charged with the rape, torture
and murder of his partner's 14-month-old baby girl.
The 18-year-old from Palm Island, who cannot be named for legal
reasons, was staying at a relative's home in Cairns at the time
of the attack, late Monday night.
Paramedics found the girl "in distress" after being alerted by
another member of the household.
The girl was taken to Cairns Base Hospital but died just before
midnight. She had suffered injuries consistent with sexual assault.
A post-mortem last night was expected to
rule on the cause of death.
The 18-year-old was arrested at the scene before briefly
appearing in the Cairns Magistrate's Court yesterday, charged
with one count each of murder and torture and two counts of rape.
The man did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody.
