TWO Geelong men are among 19 who have been arrested over a child-porn ring that is believed to be responsible for some of the worst videos Australian Federal Police (AFP) have ever seen. A Bell Park man, 40, and a 32-year-old Lovely Banks man were two of the men AFP have arrested. Seven Victorian men, including a former QC, were among those apprehended. A police officer from NSW and a childcare worker were also arrested. Videos depicting children being sexually abused for more than two hours at a time have been seized by the AFP, which said images on some of the videos were among the worst they had seen. All of the men were charged with using a carriage service for child pornography manufacture and being in possession of child pornography. The other Victorian men came from Northcote, Newham, Maldon and Altona, it was reported yesterday. They ranged in age from 27 to 74. AFP has executed 28 search warrants to date, which have resulted in the 19 arrests and three other matters being pursued through other court processes. Arrests were carried out in Victoria, Queensland and NSW. The AFP's Child Protection Operations Teams seized more than 15,000 videos and 500,000 images of child abuse, which were shared between members of a peer-to-peer network. AFP acting Deputy Commissioner of operations Andrew Colvin said it was unclear as to whether any of the children in the videos or images were Australian. "At this stage those inquiries are still ongoing," Mr Colvin said. The operation began when the AFP received a referral from the Brazilian Federal Police in December last year. This information assisted the AFP to identify a number of alleged offenders found to be sharing videos and images depicting child sexual abuse on the internet. The referrals from the Brazilian Federal Police via Interpol have led to the identification of more than 200 potential offenders in 70 countries across the globe. Mr Colvin said the operation had removed at least two children from harm and he warned that the AFP would not tolerate the viewing or exchanging of child abuse material. "The videos seized as part of this operation have to be among the worst we have seen. Some depicted sexual abuse of children lasting more than two hours," Mr Colvin said. "The viewing and exchanging of child abuse material will not be tolerated in Australia, and the AFP, with its State, territory and international counterparts, will continue to fight this repulsive crime. "If we are not knocking on your door this morning, then it could be tomorrow." The maximum penalty for the offence of possessing child abuse material is 10 years' imprisonment. AAP (12-12-2008) |

PAEDOPHILE NETWORK: Child porn images sicken police... NINETEEN men have been arrested - including Queenslanders - after police seized a haul of child porn videos described as the worst ever seen. The videos depict children being sexually abused for more than two hours. Australian Federal Police officers say some of the images are the most depraved they have ever seen. Australian Federal Police (AFP) have identified 22 men across NSW, Victoria and Queensland following a 12-month investigation into an online child abuse image and video-sharing network. Child protection operations teams seized more than 15,000 videos and 500,000 images of child abuse which were shared between members of a peer-to-peer network. The images and video included the sexual abuse of children as young as 12 months old. Police so far have executed 28 search warrants which have resulted in 19 men being arrested and three other matters being pursued through other court processes. POLICE have described some of the videos and images seized in a year-long child pornography investigation as among the worst they had ever seen. The Australian Federal Police operation, called Resistance, has resulted in the arrest of 29 people along Australia's East Coast. Among those arrested are a NSW police officer and a retired Victorian Queens Counsel. Officers said the children being abused in the videos are as young as 12 months. Two NSW children had been identified by police as targets of potential abuse and removed from contact with the alleged offenders. The AFP said those arrested were among 200 "persons of interest" identified across 70 nations following an investigation by Brazilian authorities. AFP high-tech crime operations national manager Neil Gaughan said the child porn network had operated via the "peer-to-peer" file sharing network eMule. He said such networks - which allow anyone in the world to share files online without going through internet service providers - presented a "challenging environment" for law enforcement. But Brazilian police went on-line covertly to bust the network. AFP raids as a result of the Brazilian referral had resulted in the seizure of more than 15,000 videos and 5000 images of child pornography. Some of the videos were up to three hours in length and depicted adults having sex with children, Mr Gaughan said. They had been classified as rating four out of five on the international Copine scale of child porn, and had traumatised police who had viewed the material, Mr Gaughan said. "The severity of the images are probably the worst we've ever done," he said. Mr Gaughan said Brazilian police referred the matter to the AFP in December last year and passed on the IP addresses of all the Australian suspects' computers. AFP officers tracked them down. The 29 Australians arrested so far are from NSW, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia. Since Tuesday, the AFP had arrested four NSW men aged 36, 27, 31, and 44. One of those arrested is NSW police officer David Peter Stewart, 43, of Penshurst. In Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday, prosecutors laid an extra 43 charges on Stewart, who is accused of accessing child porn and of having sex with a girl, 15.
