Confession Leads to Two Arrests Over North Tce Skate Park Rape

THE guilt of raping an 11-year-old boy at Adelaide's city skate park has led a Queensland man to give himself up to police and dob in his alleged accomplice.
The former South Australian man, 30, walked in to the Maroochydore police station on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and made a full confession, Detective Inspector Mark Trenwith of the Sexual Crime Branch said today.
He also provided police with the name of a 42-year-old Tranmere man - his alleged accomplice in the attack that horrified Adelaide. The second man was arrested when he returned from an overseas trip.
Police will allege that the pair lured the boy away from the skate park on North Terrace in the early hours of June 25, 2006.
During their alleged sexual assault on the boy, the pair took photographs with their mobile phones.
"This attack could be described as a depraved incident and is on the very serious end of the scale of sexual assaults,'' Det-Insp Trenwith said.
The Queensland man made a "full confession to his involvement in this particular crime and is now co-operating fully with police'', he added.
"The victim's family are relieved that there have been arrests. To the (Queensland) man's credit he is feeling guilty to what has happened and has not been able to move on and that moved him to hand himself up to police and subsequently being extradited from Queensland."
Det-Insp Trenwith said "although the case was open we were not actively investigating it".
"The two arrested people, who were known to each other, were not part of our investigation. They were not persons of interest to us - it shows that these cases are never closed".
Computers and clothing have been seized from both men and are being forensically examined.
The extradited man has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday. The Tranmere man will appear today.
Both men have been charged with two counts of rape and one of producing child pornography.
