Paedophile Caught In Sri Lanka

Further trafficking in minors for commercial sex has come to light following the arrest of an Australian paedophile in Hikkaduwa, police officers and child-rights activists said.
Fenwick John Douglas 75, from Sydney Australia, was arrested at the Thirangama Rest House in Hikkaduwa on September 5, in the company of six boys. Two of five boys, are 16 years old. They had been brought to Hikkaduwa from Taladuwa and Dehimalwatte in Negombo.
The suspected pimp was also arrested in the same room.
''There is clear evidence here of child trafficking” said SSP Nihal Karunaratna, Police Child Protection Bureau chief. He said that they were seeking legal advice to prosecute-the pimp. Douglas was due to appear in court on Friday.
Meanwhile, chairperson of the Child Rights Group PEACE, Maureen Seneviratne, said trafficking of children had been going on in Sri Lanka for a while. ''Debmalwatte is notorious for prostituted children. This is a major racket,'' she said. Seneviratne observed that they suspected convicted paedophile Bertram Lemond to have taken minor boys overseas. Lemond was convicted in 1997. She said that pimps and procurers can be charged under Section 228 of the Penal Code.
If convicted, suspects can be served with a prison sentence of up to five years.
