Carer's Hidden History Of Child Sexual Assault

A man convicted of indecently assaulting two children aged two and five has been caring for Savannah Hartley - the little girl whose father was this week acquitted of murdering her mother.
Paul Christopher Lawes, 46, did not disclose his convictions for pedophilia to authorities, despite having regular contact with Savannah since birth.
Savannah is the daughter of acquitted murderer Dharmander Singh.
For the past three years he has cared for Sawannah, who is now aged four and has cerebral palsy, with his partner Valerie Bartley at their home in Paringa in the Riverland.
Mr Lawes has been in a relationship with Ms Hartley, the maternal grandmother of the child, for about 15 years.
He told Mr Singh's Supreme Court trial he did not disclose his convictions on the advice of lawyer Lee Rodda - who has since been struck off for indecently assaulting a schoolgirl in his office.
Mr Lawes said Valerie Bartley and the child's mother Linda Bartley - who was shot dead by Mr Singh outside Berri's Big Orange in 2001 - knew about his past but "they trusted me".
During the murder trial, Mr Lawes was cross-examined by defence counsel Marie Shaw, QC, and admitted having convictions for indecently assaulting two children more than 15 years ago. "Did you tell.. when you were put forward as a supervisor?" Mrs Shaw asked.
"No.. I was advised by Linda's solicitor not to mention it, it wasn't needed," Mr Lawes replied. Hetty Johnston of child protection group Bravehearts said the system had failed Savannah.
"If (authorities) -we purporting to be there to act in the interests of the child one would think the first question asked would be 'is this a safe environment?'. The child needs to be taken away from that situation immediately," she said.
New rules that significantly toughen the requirement to disclose relevant information to authorities will come into force on Monday.
Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said he was seeking a full briefing to see if any action could be taken. "The main issue here is the welfare of the child and the primary responsibility for child welfare in SA resides with Family and Youth Services," he said.
A spokeswoman for Families and Communities Minister Jay Weatherill said he was unable to comment for legal reasons.
Premier Mike Rann also spoke out yesterday, saying he was "flabbergasted" by the jury's verdict and hoped Mr Singh would not be permitted to stay in Australia.
"I certainly wouldn't welcome him living in my street, and I think most South Australians would think the same,'' Mr Rann said. Mr Singh remains in prison because his visa has expired, but plans to seek custody of Savannah.
