Convicted Western Australian paedophile Paul Thompson has been remanded in custody after pleading guilty to breaching his sex offender reporting conditions. The 57-year-old flew to South East Asia in February without alerting authorities of his travel plans. He was arrested in Thailand and arrived in Perth last night after federal authorities cancelled his visa. Thompson appeared in the Perth Magistrates Court today. Police Prosecutor Brett Spark called for Thompson's imprisonment, telling the court the offence was a most serious breach of new sex offender legislation. Thompson told the court he had endeavoured to comply with all the conditions placed on him and could not see what he had done wrong. Magistrate Pamela Hogan refused his application for bail saying that his offence was serious and he posed a flight risk She said authorities had been unable to monitor his whereabouts while overseas. Police will be waiting for Australian paedophile Paul Thompson when he steps off a flight in Perth following his deportation from Thailand. Thompson, who is listed on the Australian National Child Offender register, was detained on August 11 on immigration charges while attempting to leave Thailand for Cambodia to renew his Thai visa. His name was on an immigration watch list. West Australian police want to talk to the 56-year-old when he arrives about not complying with the register by failing to inform police of his movements when he left the country, they said. Child protection officers are also expected to meet Thompson when he arrives in Australia, they said. Thompson, who is originally from Western Australia, was deported from Bali in February on charges of breaching travel restrictions and told reporters he was keen to return to "the more tolerant society of Bali". A handcuffed Thompson was taken by Thai police to the airport and was due to fly to Perth in the mid-afternoon, Thai immigration officials said. Police have said Thompson has a long history of child abuse charges in several countries possibly over many decades. Thai police also accused him of molesting children in southern Thailand. He had faced prison in Australia on paedophile charges, but fled to south-east Asia, where he travelled on multiple forged passports. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) recently applied for Thompson's passport to be cancelled but the application was only received by Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs after he had left Australia. He had been held since his arrest at the Immigration Detention Centre (IDC), the same holding cells as another notorious Australian child sex offender, Bradley Pen Dragon. Pen Dragon has been held at the IDC since he was released from Klong Prem prison on June 30 after receiving a Royal Pardon. He was among 70 foreign prisoners given a general amnesty by Thai King Bhumipol Adulyadej that also went to thousands of prisoners in Thai jails. Pen Dragon had served 10 years of a 15-year jail term for sex offences dating back to 1993. He was guilty of threatening, beating and raping three girls - one aged 12 and two aged eight. But so far no family members or associates in Australia have come forward to pay for Pen Dragon's air ticket. Thompson's departure came just hours before Thai police were to deport a 41-year-old US teacher, John Mark Karr, who was arrested on Thursday over the murder of American child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey ten years ago. AN Australian man not allowed to leave his country because he is on a list of child-sex offenders has been caught in Thailand and will be deported, Thai police said today. Paul Thompson, 57, who "has committed dozens of sexual offences" on Australian children over "several decades", was arrested on Friday while leaving for Cambodia to renew his Thai visa, immigration police said in a statement. Thompson, who told reporters he was sentenced to two years' jail in 1990 in Perth for "tickling and stroking children in a swimming pool", was put on the Australian National Child Offender Register and required to make regular reports the police. But Thai police quoted their Australian counterparts as saying Thompson fled to Southeast Asia using various aliases. He came to Thailand in June after being denied entry to Indonesia and Malaysia, Thai police said. "He is a threat to society," Thai immigration police chief Suwat Tumrongsiskul said.
