Child porn nurse fights for job
A GEELONG Hospital nurse convicted of child porn charges is fighting to keep his job.
54, is hoping he can convince the Medical Board of Australia to allow him to keep his nursing registration.
A Barwon Health spokeswoman said the intensive care nurse was suspended without pay once the child porn charges surfaced.
"As a consequence of the charges laid against Mr Omant he is not currently practising at the Geelong Hospital," the spokeswoman said.
Omant, a father-of-one, was found with 1110 graphic images and 165 videos that depicted children in sexual actions and poses, following an Australian Federal Police investigation.
The material, which a County Court judge described "truly disgraceful" when he sentenced Omant on Friday, was stored on two laptops and a USB stick.
Omant had his 18-month jail term wholly suspended for two years and was also placed on the sex offenders register for life.
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency has been notified of his criminal activity.
Omant will now face a tribunal which will determine if he gets to keep his nursing registration.
Possible outcomes from the tribunal could include issuing a caution or reprimand, imposing conditions, a fine, suspending the registration, cancelling the registration or taking no further action.
Under law, the board has the power to take "immediate action to protect the health and safety of the public".
Omant pleaded guilty to three child porn related charges.
He will face the tribunal at a date to be fixed

Nurse guilty of 'filthy' child porn
A GEELONG Hospital nurse who aided the "filthy" child porn trade escaped jail yesterday despite a stash of vile images and videos being found at his home.
Peter Omant was found with 1110 graphic images and 165 videos that depicted children in sexual actions and poses, following an Australian Federal Police investigation.
The County Court heard the images and videos were stored on two laptops and a USB stick.
Judge Geoffrey Chettle said the 54-year-old Geelong West man typed in several key words in an internet search engine including "jail bait" to look for the child porn material.
"The term jail bait is more true than you appreciated," he said.
"I have observed a sample of the images and they are truly disgraceful.
"They are appalling. They are all awful. Nothing good can be said about them.
"If there is no market for obtaining this filth there will be less people producing it."
Omant, an intensive care nurse, pleaded guilty to three child-porn related charges.
Barrister Daryl Wraith said his client had been suspended from his job at the hospital without pay while the matter was heard.
He said Omant was socially isolated and drank heavily but had made steps to rehabilitate himself.
"He did it in the privacy of his own home and did not appreciate it involved the abuse of young children and young adults," Mr Wraith said.
The court heard Omant, a father-of-one, did not distribute or sell any of the images or videos.
Omant had his 18-month jail term wholly suspended for two years.
He was also placed on the sex offenders register for life.
His position at the Geelong Hospital remains unclear
