Paedophile Robert Edwin Collins abused girl for eight years 'for fun'

Paedophile Robert Edwin Collins told a girl he sexually abused for eight years it 'was just a bit of fun.

A paedophile who dismissed eight years of abuse on a young girl as "just a bit of fun" has been jailed for 12 years by a District Court judge.
Robert Edwin Collins was found guilty by a jury of the persistent sexual abuse of a girl from when she was six years old in the 1980s.
Judge Boylan said Collins was dismissive of the victim when she eventually confronted him several years ago - telling the woman the abuse was `just a bit of fun'
"Your answer to her on that occasion sums up the way you treated her - as a toy to be played with at your whim," Judge Boylan said.
"Others in the community who are minded to treat children as you have done must know that they will be dealt with sternly."
Collins, 61, was brought from custody to the court in a wheelchair, with his lawyer asking for a merciful sentence because of numerous physical ailments including morbid obesity and arthritis.
Collins, who was forced to retire as an inspector for Adelaide City Council several years ago because of a hip disability, sat silently in the dock dressed in blue prison clothes.
Judge Boylan said Collins had shown no remorse or insight into the harm he had caused his victim, who continued to suffer depression and poor health as a consequence of the years of abuse.
He sentenced Collins to 12 years imprisonment and imposed a non-parole period of six years, taking into account that the paedophile would spend his sentence inside a health facility within the prison system.

Paedophile jailed, despite citing sickness

A remorseless paedophile who described his crimes as "just a bit of fun" has been jailed for at least six years.
Robert Edwin Collins, 61, was found guilty by an Adelaide jury of persistent sexual exploitation of a young girl in the 1980s.
The District Court heard he constantly abused her from when she was six.
The morbidly-obese man, who is confined to a wheelchair, initially argued he was too sick for jail.
His lawyer ordered medical reports to help clarify whether Collins could get appropriate care from Correctional Services and whether prison authorities could cope with him.
Judge Michael Boylan said it was clear the man's needs could be met even though prison staff would have problems.
He said Collins had shown no remorse.
"When [the victim] challenged you many years later saying you were wrong for what you did ... you replied 'It was just a bit of fun'," he said.
"Your answer to her on that occasion sums up the way you treated her, as a toy to be played with at your whim.
"It was extremely serious offending, it was prolonged and a gross breach of trust."
The court heard the abuse had lasting effects for the victim.
"You have shown no remorse for your behaviour. I have no reason to believe you have any insight into it," Judge Boylan said.
Collins had been employed as an Adelaide City Council inspector before a hip problem forced him out of work.
He also has heart disease, arthritis and other significant health problems.
Collins was brought to court in an access taxi and special arrangements were needed in the courtroom to get him into the dock.
Judge Boylan jailed Collins for 12 years, with a non-parole term of six years.
"Because your time in prison will be more difficult than able-bodied men, I fix a lower than usual non-parole period," he said.
