Scouts Ignored Warnings of Sex Fiend
SENIOR scout officials yesterday accepted responsibility for ignoring repeated warnings
that a leading scout master was a serial pedophile.
After years of repeated denials, the NSW Scouting Association yesterday settled out of
court the latest case brought by one of the victims of Venture scout leader
Robert Potter.
Potter, 59, wooed his victims with a house like "Disneyland", which had gaming machines, a spa and
heated swimming pool at Narwee in Sydney's south .
A top scout master, Potter was a predator who used his home to secretly groom young boys before
abusing them for 24 of the 30-plus years he was leader of the Narwee Venturers.
'Shameful episode in scouting history'
The NSW Scout Association has continued to fight compensation cases brought by his victims
despite proof they ignored warnings and despite Potter being jailed in 2006 for 18 counts of
aggravated sexual assault on four boys between 1978 and 2002.
Even yesterday, the association forced the latest victim, now 26, to give evidence in the NSW
District Court before settling the case.
"This is one of the most shameful episodes in scouting history in this State," the former scout's
lawyer Greg Walsh said outside court.
The man, whose parents are consumed with guilt because they were also involved in the scout
movement but had no idea about Potter's perversion, said he was still waiting for an apology
from the scouts.
"They never contacted me, they never attempted to help me and that is a policy breakdown that
needs to be rectified," said the man, who cannot identified.
He had been in the scouts for 10 years after joining as a cub at the age of eight. Details of
the settlement are to remain secret. In 1988 and 1994, two families made separate complaints
to the scouts about Potter.
In 1996, police passed on a third warning to the scouts from the dob-in line during the Wood
royal commission's investigation into pedophiles. Potter was jailed in 2006 for eight years
with a minimum term of 5½ years.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal that another two victims of the serial predator have come
forward and Potter last week pleaded guilty to fresh charges involving their abuse.
He is due to be sentenced in the District Court on these cases on June 20.
In September last year, the scout association was ordered to pay $502,000 to another victim
after fighting the case to the end.
A spokesman for Scouts NSW said: "The insurance company for Scouts NSW is responsible for
the conduct of any legal cases and payments. Scouts NSW does not discuss individual cases."
