Serial rapist Ryan Cain was allegedly protesting and not trying to escape from Wolston Correctional Centre
A serial rapist who managed to climb onto the roof of the Wolston Correctional
Centre at Wacol in Brisbane's south today was staging a protest and was not
trying to escape, prison officials say.
Ryan Cain, who is serving 11 years for three counts of rape and break and enter,
escaped the prison through an enclosed walkway when a rear roller door opened while
he was in the prison workshop just before 11am today.
He then climbed onto the roof.
A man hunt ensued with the dog squad deployed and he was found on the roof half-an hour later.
Cain has since been taken to the prison's detention unit.
Husband 'would have killed' alleged rapist
The husband of an alleged rape victim said yesterday he would have killed the accused rapist if he could have.
"If I could have got to him I would have killed him," the husband told the District Court in Mackay yesterday.
"And I would have claimed self defence because he raped my wife.
"If he was an animal or a dog they would have put him to sleep long ago."
The husband said that when he burst open his wife's bedroom door he saw Ryan Cain on top of her.
Cain, who was not wearing a shirt and who had his pants around his knees, slammed the door on him, he said.
The husband said his wife was repeatedly screaming and yelling for help.
He used an ornamental sword, a posthole shovel and his bare hands to try to break down the door and free his wife, he said.
After he smashed a hole in the door he was clawing at pieces of it and he said Cain cut off the top of one of his fingers.
"Pieces of the door were coming off and I was ripping at it with my hands. It came off inch by inch, piece by piece.
"Next thing I've seen blood everywhere and I saw my finger was cut off.
"I yelled out: My finger. My finger. I'm going to kill you.
"My wife was screaming continually.
"I screamed to my wife: Just smash the window. Just get out. Just get out.
The husband said his wife kicked out a bedroom window and when Cain turned to look at her he jabbed him in the back of the head, through the hole in the door, with the shovel.
The Crown case is that Cain and the husband had been together for one day, had gone out drinking and clubbing, and that Cain separated and went to the Andergrove house and allegedly raped the wife four times before her husband got home.
The husband said he and Cain had been at a nightclub earlier, before they became separated, and Cain told him: "I've got to get a bitch. I've got to get a (expletive)."
And the husband said he told Cain: "Look. There are girls everywhere."
Ryan Thomas Cain, 25, has pleaded not guilty to four charges of rape and one of causing grievous bodily harm, all at Andergrove on June 9.
The trial before a jury of four men and eight women, will enter its fifth day today.
