Rapist Steven John Ainsworth jailed for crimes 20 years later

Multiple rapist Steven John Ainsworth will serve at least eight years in jail for dragging two women off Adelaide streets and attacking them 20 years ago.
Ainsworth, 40, was sentenced in the Supreme Court today for two separate offences that occurred in 1989 and 1994.
Justice Michael David said Ainsworth deserved separate penalties for the crimes.
Although they were of a similar nature, they were not linked.
He sentenced Ainsworth to 14 years' jail with an eight year non-parole period.
"Both involved violence, indignity, terror and will obviously leave a scar on these women for life," he said.
"It is the classical nightmare of every woman, namely being dragged off the street, assaulted and raped."
Justice David said psychological reports showed he was sentencing a "very different" person from the man who raped two women two decades earlier.
For that reason, he dismissed the prosecutor's application to jail Ainsworth indefinitely as an uncontrollable sexual predator.
"(Then) you were highly dysfunctional, drug dependent and heavily violent toward women," he said.
Ainsworth admitted to grabbing an 18-year-old woman at Rundle Mall and dragging her to an alley where he forced her to the ground and raped her.
Five years later he confronted, followed, assaulted and raped a 19-year-old woman on North Terrace.
He also threatened her with a brick.
After these offences Ainsworth moved to Western Australia.
There, he was convicted of several sex crimes against women and spent five years and eight months in custody.
He was discovered and charged with the South Australian offences in 2009 and extradited to his home state through DNA evidence in the sex offenders register.

Doctors to check rapist's self control

Doctors will examine a man who raped four women to evaluate whether he can control his sexual urges.
Steven John Ainsworth, 38, was in jail in Western Australia for two rapes he committed there in 1998, when his DNA was linked with two rapes in Adelaide in 1989 and 1994.
He was extradited to Adelaide two years ago and pleaded guilty to the South Australian crimes.
In the SA Supreme Court, Justice David Peek ordered a report be prepared on whether Ainsworth could show self control.
The case will return to court in April.

Rape case moved to higher court

A prosecutor has asked that a man who committed four rapes within nine years be declared incapable of controlling his sexual instincts.
Steven John Ainsworth, 39, was extradited to Adelaide from Western Australia two years ago after police matched his DNA to two cold cases.
He pleaded guilty in the District Court to the rapes, one in a laneway off Rundle Mall in 1989, the other five years later in another laneway behind the Botanic Hotel in Adelaide.
Prosecutor Carmen Matteo said Ainsworth committed another two rapes in 1998 for which he was jailed in Western Australia.
She successfully applied for the case to be shifted to the Supreme Court, which can consider whether Ainsworth is capable of controlling himself.
Ainsworth will face the Supreme Court later in the month.
