A SWELL of information has been received in relation to identifying a possible suspect in the attempted abduction of a 12-year-old girl in Tannum Sands last Thursday. Numerous calls have been received by Crime Stoppers nominating possible persons of interest in relation to the incident which reportedly occurred along the Turtle Way cycle path about 3.40pm. 
Det Snr Sgt Moon said a lot of information had been provided by members of the public in these reports and now it was a matter of identifying clearly who it (the perpetrator) may be. With the investigation reliant on the information provided by the victim child, police were still trying to identify the man who intervened and assisted the girl. “We are very interested in speaking to the male person who intervened,” Det Snr Sgt Moon said. “We are very grateful for the assistance he provided to the child and the valuable information he may be able to provide to the investigation.” According to information provided to police, the girl was riding her bike along the Turtle Way cycle path when she was approached by a man who asked her to come with him. After refusing the man’s advances, the girl has attempted to ride away but was grabbed on the arm by the man who begun to pull her away. Another man riding his bicycle past the scene has intervened, yelling at the offender to desist and warning he would call police. The offender has fled the scene on foot. Still yet to come forward or be identified by police, the man then assisted the girl by accompanying her across the John Oxley Bridge. The offender is described as being tall with a very large build, aged in his 40s, dark skin, short bristly brown/black hair, short beard around his face and brown eyes. He was wearing a singlet and shorts and thongs. Det Snr Sgt Moon said the girl was cycling by herself in the vicinity of an area known as sandpit six. He said the offender has come up and spoke to the girl, indicating he knew her parents. “She has done all the right things,” Det Snr Sgt Moon said. “I commend the young lady for her actions. “She has observed and recognised possible danger and shown protective behaviour. “It is unfortunate she has been grabbed in this instance.” The investigation being conducted in to the attempted abduction is a joint effort between Gladstone CIB, Child Protection Unit and Tannum Sands Police.
