Brothers Face Court 30 years After Raping Two Girls
BROTHERS who sexually assaulted two little girls in unrelated incidents during the 1970s have finally
been sentenced, 30 years after their crimes were committed.
Charges were only brought against the pair after the victims came forward to police in 2006.
Peter Gibson, 52, of Birdsey St, East Geelong, had pleaded not guilty to six counts of indecent assault
against a child under 16, but a jury last week found him guilty on all counts.
Afterwards his brother,
Stephen Gibson, 49, of Church St, Hamlyn Heights, pleaded guilty to seven counts
of indecent assault and one of carnal knowledge.
Handing down sentence in Geelong County Court yesterday, Judge John Nixon said the offences relating to
Peter Gibson occurred during the 1970s when he was aged 18 to 22 years and his victims aged between five and seven years.
He said that on several occasions after sexually assaulting one of the girls he would tell her not to tell
anyone because it was 'our secret'.
Judge Nixon said the first lot of offences by Stephen Gibson occurred when he was aged 13 and forced a
seven year-old-girl to have sexual intercourse with him.
"The second lot of offending occurred when your victim was aged seven to eight years and you were 20 to 21," he said.
Judge Nixon said the Gibson brothers came from a sexually dysfunctional background but neither had sexually
re-offended in the 30 years since.
He said the sexual abuse inflicted by the pair had impacted considerably on both victims' lives.
"One of the victims said sexual abuse was something which lived with you for the rest of your life no matter
how much you tried to deal with it," he said.
"It never goes away."
Judge Nixon said that, to be fair, both victims had suffered sexual abuse at the hands of others while they
were growing up and the Gibson brothers were not alone in the impact it had caused on their lives.
The judge said that Peter Gibson, by his plea of not guilty, had shown no remorse whatever and by going to
trial had forced the victims to relive their trauma by having to give evidence.
He said the earlier offending of Stephen Gibson had occurred when he was an immature 13-year-old and the victim
aged seven but his second lot of offending occurred when he was in his 20s and his victim aged seven to eight years.
Judge Nixon sentenced Peter Gibson to two years and nine months jail with nine months to be swerved immediately
and the remainder suspended for two years.
Stephen Gibson was also convicted on all counts and sentenced to 18 months jail wholly suspended for two years.
Judge Nixon directed that both men be placed on the serious sex offenders register for life.
